One of the most disillusioning moments in American TV history was the revelation that some of the big-money quiz shows of the 1950s were rigged. The most famous incident occurred on Twenty-One when longtime champion Herbert Stempel was dethroned by Charles Van Doren. Stempel was groomed by producer Dan Enright to look and behave like a know-it-all nerd--which had its desired effect. The public rooted for the handsome and sophisticated challenger, Charles Van Doren, to defeat him. Both players were coached on the questions they would receive. After a series of tie games, Stempel deliberately missed a relatively easy question that would have given him the win. The game ended in another tie and Van Doren won the next game. For 'taking a dive,' Stempel had been promised his own panel show by Enright. When Enright reneged, Stempel told the press that Twenty-One was rigged. At first his claims were thought to be those of a sore loser, but when contestants on another game show, Dotto, came forward with solid evidence of fixes, Stempel's accusations had to be investigated. The 1994 movie Quiz Show was based on this scandal.

The Hollywood blacklist, was the mid-20th Century list of screenwriters, actors, directors, musicians, and other U.S. entertainment professionals who were denied employment in the field because of their political beliefs or associations, real or suspected. Artists were barred from work on the basis of their alleged membership in or sympathy toward the American Communist Party, involvement in liberal or simply humanitarian political causes that enforcers of the blacklist associated with communism, and/or refusal to assist federal investigations into Communist Party activities. Some were blacklisted merely because their names came up at the wrong place and time. Even during the period of its strictest enforcement, the late 1940s through the late 1950s, the blacklist was rarely made explicit and verifiable, but it caused direct damage to the careers of scores of American artists, often made betrayal of friendship, not to mention principle, the price for a livelihood, and promoted ideological censorship across the entire industry. Pictured are Front row (from left): Herbert Biberman, attorneys Martin Popper and Robert W. Kenny, Albert Maltz, Lester Cole. Middle row: writer Dalton Trumbo, John Howard Lawson, Alvah Bessie, Samuel Ornitz. Back row: Ring Lardner Jr., Edward Dmytryk, Adrian Scott.

During the Great Depression, many rural automobile owners could not afford gasoline. These resourceful folks just hitched up their horses to their vehicles. The unusual vehicles were derisively called Hoover Wagons after president Herbert Hoover, who was America's chief executive when the Great Depression began.

Reputed to be America's most attractive American First Lady, Frances Folsom was the wife of Grover Cleveland. Cleveland was a bachelor when he became president in 1885. He married Folsom in 1886 when he was 49 and she was not quite 22, making her the youngest First Lady ever. (Attaboy, Grover!) Her father, Herbert Folsom, had been Cleveland's best friend. When Herbert died in 1875, Cleveland became the executor of his estate and 11-year-old Frances became Cleveland's ward. That Cleveland's relationship with Frances eventually evolved from guardian to romantic interest would likely be considered scandalous today, but little was made of it in 1886. They had a happy 22-year marriage that ended with the former president's death in 1908. She died in 1947.

You'll want to watch this: This is the final few minutes of the infamous episode of Twenty One from 1956 when reigning champion Herbert Stempel 'took a dive' on orders from the show's producers so handsome challenger Charles Van Doren could win. Both players answer the question about the wives of Henry VIII correctly, but in an earlier game that had ended in a tie, Stempel had deliberately missed a relatively simple question on movies that would have given him the win.

To the gallant crews of the Titanic and the Carpathia
To the passengers ... victims and survivors alike
We remember
Uphold them with Thy saving grace.
Thou Who supports with tender might
The balanced birds in all their flight.
Lord, if the tempered winds be near,
That, having Thee, they know no fear.

In Their Own Words ..
Remembering the Forgotten Theater of World War II
The China - Burma - India Theater
Throughout the history of the world, in times of peril and aggression, nations have called upon their military forces for defense against their enemies. Our country has been very fortunate for, whenever the men and women who comprise our Army, Navy, air forces and other services have been called upon; they have served their country bravely and faithfully, regardless of where they were sent or what they were asked to do. Many Americans remember their dedicated service and are appreciative of their performances, but, too soon after the danger is over, the services of these veterans fade into oblivion. — 1st Lt.
