1931 Bela Lugosi Movie Poster Lugosi, the youngest of four children, was born Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó' in Lugos, Hungary on October 20, 1882. On arrival in America, the 6-feet-1 inch, 180 lb. Lugosi worked for some time as a laborer, then returned to the theater within the Hungarian-American community. He was approached to star in a play adapted by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. The Horace Liveright production was successful. Despite his excellent notices in the title role, and appearances in some American silent films, Lugosi had to campaign vigorously for the chance to repeat his stage success in Tod Browning's movie version of Dracula (1931), produced by Universal Pictures.

GWTW Actress Alicia Rhett Dead at 98 Alicia Rhett, the actress who played India Wilkes (Ashley Wilkes' sister) in the classic 1939 movie Gone With the Wind, has died at age 98 at a retirement home in Charleston, SC where she had resided since 2002. She would have turned 99 on February 1, 2014. GWTW was Rhett's only movie role, although she had a lengthy career as a stage actress. David O. Selznick saw one of Rhett's performances and asked her to audition for the role of Melanie Hamilton. She did not get it, of course. (Olivia de Havilland did.) Rhett instead got the much smaller role of India Wilkes who greatly dislikes Scarlett O'Hara and can see through her southern belle facade. Rhett did not care for Hollywood and returned to South Carolina once her commitment to GWTW was over. At the time of her passing, Rhett was the oldest of four living GWTW cast members whose names appear in the film's credits. (Olivia de Havilland now holds that distinction.) Rhett's great-grandfather was a secessionist senator.

Doctor Pet Vet This is one from my childhood days! In Canada there was a terrific kids' show in the early 1970s called The Hilarious House of Frightenstein that was an after-school staple. Locally produced by CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario, it starred the versatile Billy Van in numerous roles. In this educational bit, Van plays Dr. Pet Vet, the kindly veterinarian who always brought a potential pet to Igor. As always, the mean Sloth wouldn't allow Igor to have any pet!

Tony Conigliaro Hard-luck ballplayer Tony Conigliaro of the Boston Red Sox was featured on the cover of this issue of Sports Illustrated from July 1970. Conigliaro was the favorite to win the American League's Rookie of the Year award in 1964, but he broke his arm in August. In 1965, at age 20, he led the AL in home runs with 32. Two years later, on Auugst 18, 1967, Conigliaro was hit in the face with a fastball thrown by Jack Hamilton of the Angels. The pitch broke Conigliaro's cheekbone and damaged his left retina. (The effects are shown in the SI cover photo.) The injury was so devastating that Conigliaro missed the entire 1968 season. He had good seasons in both 1969 and 1970, but lingering eye problems from his 1967 injury caused him to retire in 1971. Conigliaro attempted a brief comeback in 1975 only to retire again. In 1982, at age 37, he suffered a severe heart attack. Conigliaro was virtually in a vegetive state until his death in 1990 at age 45.

Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds Fallin in Love Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds was a 1970s AM soft rock trio from Los Angeles. The original members were Dan Hamilton (guitar/lead vocal), Joe Frank Carollo (bass/vocal), and Tommy Reynolds (multi-instrumentalist/vocal), all of whom had previously played in The T-Bones, a 1960s band noted for the instrumental hit "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)". The group first hit the charts in 1971 with "Don't Pull Your Love." Reynolds left the group in late 1972, and was replaced by keyboardist Alan Dennison -- however, the band still kept the name "Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds". This revised line-up scored the group's biggest hit, 1975's "Fallin' In Love".

Maxwell House Commercial This is Margaret Hamilton, the actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. Many probably already knew this but I only discovered it today! I never knew in the 70s as a child watching the commercial that it was the same person. You learn something new every day!

HHOF Librarian The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was one of the oddest kids' shows ever made--and one of the best. It was a locally produced show done by CHCH-TV in a small studio in Hamilton, Ontario. Billy Van played most of the show's characters--including the Librarian who vainly tried to terrify viewers with benign works of children's literature.
