I can't honestly claim to be a gymnastics fan, but even I was captivated by Olga Korbut in 1972. Prior to the Munich Olympics, the world's dominant female gymnasts were mature, balletic-type women. Korbut ushered in the era of pixie-like pubescent teenage gymnasts.

At the 1976 Montreal Olymics, Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto broke his leg in the floor exercise, but he kept competing for the sake of his team. This truly takes guts, folks!

Olympic gymnastics rules mandate that competitors must be at least 16 years old. Severe doubts surrounded the true age of many members of the gold-medal-winning female Chinese gymnastics team in 2008. Here is a photo of the Chinese team and the American team on the podium. Call me cynical and suspicious, but the adolescent American girls look way older than their Chinese rivals.
