McDonalds Arch Deluxe flop McDonalds has had a few flops on their menu over the years. None was more costly than the Arch Deluxe fiasco of 1996. McDonald's marketed the sandwich as an adults-only burger. A very odd $100-million advertising campaign was launched to emphasize the point. Commercials featured kids who didn't want anything to do with the burger. (Some even said it was yucky.) Surveys showed the bizarre ad campaign was turning off potential customers from all demographic groups. Moreover, the Arch Deluxe was the highest priced burger on the menu, which did not help sales either. McDonald's then tried to salvage the burger with a more traditional advertising approach: This time the commercials showed McDonald's icon Ronald McDonald enoying the burger while doing adult activities, such as playing golf. It was too late, though. Even coupons allowing people to buy the burger for just a dollar failed to save the Arch Deluxe from extinction. McDonalds discontinued the sandwich in 1997.

2003 Masters Tournament Protest In 2003, the National Organization of Women, led by Martha Burk (pictured here), staged a protest at the Masters Golf Tournament because the host club, Augusta National Golf Club, only accepts male members. Burk got more than she bargained for. Enterprising vendors began selling golf balls with Burk's face on them above the phrase 'The Burk Stops Here!' Augusta's city council passed a law restricting protesters to a vacant lot about a mile from the golf course. Counter-protests began, and they begot more protests. Jesse Jackson supported Burk, so a group of anti-Jackson protesters picketed him. A chapter of the KKK--which turned out to be a one-man outfit--supported Augusta National. Weirdos and attention-seekers of all types flocked to the protest site. One man wore a tuxedo and carried a sign that said, 'Formal Protest.' Another man with an anti-feminist slant carried a placard saying, 'Make My Dinner.' Another group called People Against Ridiculous Protests picketed everybody. Perhaps the most noteworthy and creative protester was a gentlemen who loudly passed gas from the window of a moving minivan when Burk began to speak. Pun-loving Steve Rushin of Sports Illustrated comically referred to the gesture as a 'drive-by tooting.'

Rock n Rollen Rollen Frederick Stewart, also known as Rock 'n' Rollen and Rainbow Man, was a fixture in American sports culture for about a decade. He became famous for wearing a rainbow-colored afro-style wig and, later, for holding up signs reading "John 3:16" at sporting events around the United States and overseas in the 1970s and 1980s. Stewart, a born-again Christian, was determined to "get the message out" via television. He figured televised sporting events provided the best opportunities. Stewart would strategically position himself for key shots of plays or athletes. Stewart's first major appearance was at the 1977 NBA Finals where he seemed to constantly be on camera. By the time of the 1979 MLB All-Star Game, broadcasters were actively trying to avoid showing him. Undaunted, Stewart appeared behind NFL goalposts, near Olympic medal stands, and even at the Augusta National Golf Club. At the 1982 Indianapolis 500, he was behind the pits of race winner Gordon Johncock. Stewart's fame led to a Budweiser beer commercial and a Saturday Night Live parody sketch. Stewart was briefly jailed by Moscow police at the 1980 Summer Olympics for wearing a red, white, and blue afro wig. By the mid-1980s Stewart's began exhibiting irrational behavior. In the late 1980s, he began a string of stink bomb attacks. His targets included the Orange County Register, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and a Christian bookstore. The stated intent of an attempted attack at the American Music Awards was to show the public that "God thinks this stinks." Stewart is currently serving three consecutive life sentences for a orchestrating a hostage-taking and attempted kidnapping at a California hotel in 1992. Reportedly, Stewart believed that the Rapture was due to arrive in six days. During the standoff, he threatened to shoot at airplanes taking off from nearby Los Angeles International Airport and covered his hotel room windows with "John 3:16" placards. His next parole hearing is in 2017.

Our Gang - Spanky McFarland George (Spanky) McFarland had the most prolific career of any member of the Our Gang troupe. He appeared in 95 Our Gang shorts from 1932 through 1942. Even by Our Gang standards, McFarland began at a young age. His cuteness as a baby got Spanky's picture widely circulated on bread billboards in his hometown of Dallas. When Hal Roach began a new talent search, Spanky's aunt submitted his photos. This got him a screen test that was hugely positive--thus Spanky became an Our Gang regular at the age of three. The origin of Spanky's nickname is unclear; McFarland believed a Los Angeles showbiz columnist came up with it. Spanky's early Our Gang roles were as a tagalong little kid. His abilities to steal scenes and deliver funny lines got him more prominent roles. By 1936, at the age of eight, he was clearly the star of the series and the Gang's leader. He was always the 'idea man' of the Gang, devising schemes and plots. After Hal Roach sold the rights to Our Gang to MGM in 1938, MGM intended to begin anew with an entirely fresh cast of child actors. However, MGM rehired Spanky when a suitable replacement could not be found. Along with Spanky's 95 appearances in Our Gang films, he was also the lead in General Spanky (1936)--the only feature-length Our Gang film ever made. He later served in the Air Force. Spanky was working menial jobs in the 1950s when the Little Rascals reruns began to air on television. He began hosting a local program of them. Spanky's renaissance fame got him a job at Philco-Ford where he eventually became the head of national sales. In his later years Spanky hosted charity golf events. He made a cameo appearance on the sitcom Cheers in 1993. Spanky died of a heart attack not long afterwards. He was 64 years old.

Jane Blalock Cheating Controversy In 1972, 27-year-old Jane Blalock was suspended by the LPGA for cheating. Blalock was accused of shenanigans when she marked her ball. Specifically, Blalock was thought to be replacing her ball slightly ahead of the marker. Blalock sued the LPGA. She did not clear her name, but her lawsuits were responsible for the LPGA being deemed in voilation of federal antitrust laws. Years later Blalock issued a vague apology, but she did not specifically admit any wrongdoing. Despite winning 27 career LPGA titles, Blalock has not been inducted into the LPGA's Hall of Fame.

Tiger Woods Airplane Taunt Somebody paid about $1200 to have this message flown over Augusta National Golf Course during the first round of the 2010 Masters Tournament. It is a pun derived from Tiger Woods' post-affair press conference in which he said he wanted to return to a lifestyle that follows the tenets of Buddhism.
