George Hainsworth This is what NHL goalies used to look like before they were buried under layers of stuffing. Toronto's George Hainsworth is pictured here from about 1934. In the 1928-29 season, Hainsworth, tending goal for the Montreal Canadiens, recorded 22 shutouts in 44 games.

Famous Hockey Photo It looks like an image created by Hollywood, but it's a real sports photo: Bruised and bloodied Boston Bruins' goalie Sugar Jim Henry shakes hands with bruised and bloodied Montreal Canadiens' star Maurice (Rocket) Richard after the latter scored the winning goal in overtime to give his club a seven-game victory in the 1952 Stanley Cup semifinals. Richard had earlier left the game with a concussion but returned to dramatically score the game-winning tally. Hockey goalies didn't wear protective masks in 1952. Men were men back then.

Rangers-Canadiens NHL Game 1936 Great vintage sports footage! British Pathe newsreels tended to go far afield to bring viewers interesting activities from around the world. They were present at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 1936 to film an NHL game between the Montreal Canadiens (not Canadians!) versus the New York Rangers. A few things to notice; the absence of the center red line; the players standing sideways to one another on faceoffs; and the way goalies used to hold their sticks before they wore trappers on their catching hands.

1960 Olympic Hockey USA USSR Here's some rare sports footage from the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California. It's the deciding goal of the USA's 3-2 victory over the Soviet Union. The game was played in an outdoor rink. Notice the players didn't wear helmets and the goalies didn't wear masks.

Jacques Plante Wears a Mask This Heritage Canada minute recreates the events in Madison Square Garden on the night of November 1, 1959 when Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens became the first modern goaltender to regularly wear a mask in the National Hockey League.

USSR Wins 1956 Olympic Hockey Until the 1950s, Canada could send virtually any amateur team to Europe and win the annual International Ice Hockey Federation world championship tourney. (For example, Canada beat Denmark 49-0 in one game at the 1949 event using a team from Sault Ste. Marie, ON!) The Soviet Union took an interest in Olympic sports in the early 1950s. They surprisingly beat Canada 7-2 at the 1954 world tourney in their debut. In 1955 Canada sent the national amateur champs from Penticton, BC and won the championship by beating the USSR 5-0. With the national senior amateur championship team from Kitchener, ON representing Canada at the 1956 Olympics at Cortina, Italy, Canada was supposed to win another Olympic championship. Surprisingly they finished third after losing to both the USA and USSR. This clip shows the Soviets' 4-0 win over the USA and their 2-0 win over Canada. Canada's goalie was Denis Brodeur--the father of NHL great Martin Brodeur. Men were men back then: Few wore helmets and goalies didn't wear masks.

NHL Goalie Takes Puck in the Face - 1959 I posted this video in 2012 but I discovered its source was removed--so here it is again. From a 1959 Stanley Cup playoff game, Boston goalie Harry Lumley takes a backhand shot to the face from Toronto's Dick Duff. Lumley lost two teeth and was badly cut on the play. Men were men in 1959, though. The play continued as usual for about 30 seconds before Lumley froze the puck and headed to to Bruins' bench for "repairs." Lumley must have been a sight! Check out the horrified woman seated in the second row near the Boston bench: She covers her eyes!

First Goalie Mask - 1929 In 1929 Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons became the first goalie to wear a mask in a National Hockey League game. Benedict had suffered a broken nose in a previous game. To continue playing, Benedict commissioned a Boston leather goods company to make an experimental mask for him. The novelty didn't last very long--just one game. Benedict said the contraption obscured his view on low shots. New York Ranger goalie Charlie Rayner wore a partial mask for a few games in 1947 to protect a broken jaw, but he too complained of impaired vision and discarded it. Another dozen years would pass before NHL goalie Jacques Plante ushered in the modern goalie mask in 1959.
