A little slice of American history from the Edison Black Maria studio from November of 1894, shows the real life Annie Oakley, shooting fixed targets and tossed glass balls. Truly a fascinating little piece of film that bridges the real Wild West with a theme that was to run through countless fictional movies in the century to follow. The only problem I had with this was her close proximity to the targets.

An Ideal Classic that was so popular that Ideal adopted Mr. Machine as their official logo! This toy was designed by Marvin Glass a freelance toy designer and he fashioned Mr. Machine after a henpecked husband. He squawks as he walks. You could take Mr. Machine apart and even though they say it was desinged for a 5 year to do, many a Mr. Machine laid in pieces only to be tossed out by parents who couldn't figure out how to put him back together either. I repair and take apart old toys to clean them and I had one heck of a some fun putting him back together-NOT! LOL. There were two variations of Mr. Machine that came out in the 70s and one in the 80s, but nothing compares to the original Mr. Machine!!!! His orginal box is shown too!

For a short time during the early 1940s, Lake was considered one of the most reliable box office draws in Hollywood and was also known for her onscreen pairings with actor Alan Ladd. At first, the couple was teamed together merely out of physical necessity: Alan Ladd was just 5 feet 5 inches tall and the only actress then on the Paramount lot short enough to pair with him was Veronica, who stood just 4 feet 11½ inches. They made four films together: THIS GUN FOR HIRE, THE GLASS KEY, THE BLUE DAHLIA, and SAIGON. . i love this black and white photo of them!

Cleft-chinned, steely-eyed, and ruggedly handsome, Kirk Douglas is a star of international cinema who rose from being "the ragman's son" (the name give to his best-selling 1988 autobiography) of Russian-Jewish ancestry to become a bona fide superstar. When I was 7 yrs old my grandmother (being a big fan) took me to see my first Kirk Douglas film, Man Without a Star, and he became my first hero. If you're also a fan, I hope this clip will bring back a lot of fond memories.

Remember Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, and their hit song The Game of Love, from 1965? Here's some interesting facts. In 1962, he formed his group Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and got a recording contract. He was still under contract to Fontana Records after parting with The Mindbenders. He continued on alone, using musicians under the name of the Opposition. Sometimes they were billed as the Mindbenders, or just as the Wayne Fontana band. In 2005 he fought off bankruptcy, but was arrested after police were called in by bailiffs who went to his home in Glossop, Derbyshire. It is claimed that gasoline had been poured onto the hood of a car, and set on fire with a bailiff inside. Fontana was remanded in custody on May 25, 2007, in regard to the charge. He appeared at Derby Crown Court dressed as the lady of justice, with a sword, scales, crown, cape and dark glasses, claiming "justice is blind". He dismissed his lawyers. All that being said, you have to admit he's still a talented musician. Here's a clip I put together from The Game of Love taped in 1965, and more recently during a show in 2006. They're still doing concerts, and at 63, Wayne Fontana hasn't lost it yet, at least not his voice!

In 1972, Denver scored his first top ten album, with Rocky Mountain High, while its title track reached the Top Ten in 1973. In 1974, "Sunshine on My Shoulders" and "Annie's Song" both went to number one, and "Back Home Again" made it to number five. In 1975, he again had two number ones, "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and "Calypso/I'm Sorry," and a top twenty hit, "Sweet Surrender." Key to Denver's success were his many appearances on television, which in the pre-MTV era of the 1970s, with his long blond hair, embroidered 'western' shirts, affable manner & granny glasses, made him one of the first truly "tele-genic" pop stars. In subsequent years, Denver had a lower-profile career. He had a few more U.S. Top 30 hits as the 1970s ended, but nothing to match the success he enjoyed earlier. As his career slowed down, Denver focused more on humanitarian and sustainability work. He worked extensively on conservation projects and helped to create the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. On October 12, 1997, Denver was killed when the Long-EZ aircraft he was piloting crashed just off the coast of California at Pacific Grove, shortly after taking off from the Monterey Peninsula Airport.

One of the most despicable murder cases in the twentieth century was that of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, residents of suburban Chicago, who murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks in 1924. Their motive: They wanted to kill for the thrill of it and commit the perfect crime. Both Leopold, age 20, and Loeb, age 19, were exceptionally brilliant students who considered themselves intellectual supermen. On May 21, 1924 they lured Bobby Franks (a distant relative of Loeb) into a rented car. Franks was bludgeoned with a chisel and suffocated with a sock. His body was dumped into a culvert in Gary, Indiana and doused with acid to make identification difficult. The culprits mailed a typed ransom note to Franks' parents indicating that Bobby had been kidnapped. However, Franks' body was found before any ransom could be paid. Also found near the body were a pair of eye glasses that fell from Loeb's pocket during the crime. The glasses were almost unique--only three pairs had been made by a certain optician--and they led the police to Loeb. The two young men, who were reputedly homosexual lovers, were questioned and their alibis discredited. Each eventually confessed his involvement in the crime, but insisted the other was responsible for the actual murder. They were brought to trial for murder and kidnapping. Their lawyer, the famous Clarence Darrow, entered pleas of guilty in order to avoid a jury deciding the twosome's fate--which likely would have been a death sentence. Instead Darrow argued with a judge to spare his guilty clients from the death penalty. Darrow gave a rousing 12-hour oration that spared his clients' lives. Instead Leopold and Loeb were each given life sentences plus 99 years. Loeb was murdered in prison in 1936. Leopold was pardoned in 1958 and died of a heart attack in 1971. Bobby Franks, often forgotten by history, remains 14 years old forever.

This is what the ideal of female beauty was from about 1895 to 1915. It was the Gibson Girl look--named after artist Charles Dana Gibson. His drawings often illustrated magazine stories of the era. They were likely the first type of mass media to influence the perception of what feminine beauty is. The stereotypical Gibson Girl was tall, had an extreme hourglass figure, with her hair (preferably curly) piled atop her head in a bouffant, pompadour, or chignon style. This photo is of stage actress Camille Clifford who epitomized the Gibson Girl look.
