1933 Adolf Hitler Baby Photo Hoax In 1933, this supposed baby picture of Adolf Hitler circulated in newspapers in England and the United States. When it appeared in the Chicago Tribune in October 1933, the German consulate in that city denounced the photo as a hoax and provided a real baby photo of Hitler (which I posted on this website a little while ago). The hoax photo came from the London Bureau of Acme Newsphotos and originated from an unknown source in Austria. In 1938, Mrs. Harriet Downs of Lakewood, Ohio saw the photo in a magazine and recognized it as a doctored version of a photo of her two-year-old son, John May Warren, taken in 1932! The photo had been deliberately altered to make the child look sinister. How a baby photo from Ohio ended up in the hands of a hoaxer in Austria has never been discovered. Tragically, the boy in this photo died a few months later, at the age of eight, in a bicycle mishap.

Paul Potts German Cellphone Commercial This is an excellent, emotion-grabbing commercial from Germany. It uses the clip of Paul Potts' 2007 audition for Britain's Got Talent to advertise a cellphone company. The translations of the final captions say, 'Life gives us extraordinary moments. The beauty is that we can share them.'

Glenn Miller Disappearance Renowned band leader Glenn Miller's disappearance in 1944 has led to some interesting speculation. On December 15, 1944, Miller, a major in the U.S. Army, and two other military personnel departed from an RAF base in England in a small aircraft bound for Paris. Miller was scheduled to meet with his band and begin a concert tour for U.S troops in recently liberated areas of France. Miller's airplane never arrived. No wreckage nor any bodies were ever found. The prevailing wisdom is that bad weather over the English Channel caused the plane to crash into the sea killing all aboard. Two other possibilities have emerged: That same day a squadron of bombers destined for Germany had their mission aborted because of the inclement weather. Unable to return with their payload of explosives, the squadron was ordered to jettison their bombs into the English Channel. Years later one aviator claimed some of the discarded bombs accidentally caused a small aircraft flying below the squadron--which could have been Miller's--to crash into the sea. A more lurid tale claims Miller landed safely in France but died of a heart attack in a Parisian brothel. According to this yarn, Miller's seedy death was covered up by the military for propaganda reasons. This latter rumor circulated during the war and was given new life when the German tabloid Bild reprinted the brothel tale in 1997. Miller biographers consider that story to be sheer nonsense. They rightly ask, 'What became of Flight Officer John Morgan and Lt. Col. Norman F. Baessell (the other two men aboard Miller's plane) who also vanished?'

Paths of Glory Trailer Here is the original theatrical trailer from the First World War flick Paths of Glory (1957). Directed by Stanley Kubrick, it tells the story of inhuman French generals ordering a suicidal attack on an impregnable German position. When the attack fails, for the sake of morale and discipline, three soldiers are chosen to be executed for cowardice. One is selected randomly, another is chosen because he is 'socially undesirable,' and the third is chosen because the general has a personal issue with him. Kirk Douglas gives a great performance as regimental commander Colonel Dax who tries to stop the insanity. This film was banned in France until 1975. (It was also banned in Germany, where it was filmed, because the German government did not want to harm its diplomatic relations with France.)

1972 Munich Olympic Massacre This edition of Time Magazine chronicled the worst incident in the history of the Olympic Games. On September 5, 1972 a radical terrorist group, Black September, got through ridiculously lax security at the athletes' village in Munich, West Germany simply by wearing track suits and acting like they belonged there. At 4:30 a.m. they took a group of 11 Israeli athletes, coaches, and officials hostage. Two Israelis were killed almost instantly for resisting. The other nine died at the airport where special German anti-terror police got into a gun battle with the terrorists. (One German policeman was killed too.) Up to that time, the 1972 Summer Olympics had been a splendid, friendly affair. The 'openness' of the Games and limited security was deliberate. The West German organizers wanted to erase the memories of the 'Nazified' 1936 Berlin Olympics. Since that awful day, Olympic Games security has become much more efficient and hugely expensive.

Berlin Wall Comes Down 1989 On November 9, 1989, one of the major symbols of the Cold War came tumbling down: the infamous Berlin Wall. It had divided free West Berlin from communist East Germany since 1961. It was a great day for humanity!

East German Steroid Swimmers At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, American Shirley Babashoff was supposed to be the female version of Mark Spitz. Babashoff was a threat to win six gold medals. Instead, she won just one gold medal and four silvers. In every race she lost, she lost to an East German. The star of the East German women's swimming team was Kornelia Ender (pictured here). Babashoff was immediately suspicious of the East Germans because of their muscular builds and deep voices. She claimed the dressing room 'sounded like a coed room.' At the time, Babashoff was criticized as a sore loser. The press dubbed her 'Surly Shirley.' After East Germany collapsed in 1989 the truth came out: East German athletes were regularly given steroids via injections to increase their athletic capabilities. Babashoff now campaigns to have the East German medal results nullified.

THE FORGOTTEN VICTIMS OF WWII The Greatest Mass Rape in History One of this century's greatest crimes, and probably one of the greatest crimes against women in history, was the mass rape of the conquered women of Europe in 1945. The rapists were mainly Red Army soldiers, some of them non-White troops from the Far East and Central Asian Republics of the Soviet Union. As the Red Army advanced toward her in 1945, the city of Berlin had become a city virtually without men. Out of a civilian population of 2,700,000, 2,000,000 were women. Former Soviet war correspondent Natalya Gesse recalled: "The Russian soldiers were raping every German female from eight to 80... It was an army of rapists." The rape victims were not just Germans. Polish women also suffered. So did young Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian women who had been sent back to Germany by the Wehrmacht for slave labor. As Author Antony Beevor put it, "If anything, the events of 1945 reveal how thin the veneer of civilization can be when there is little fear of retribution."
