AMERICA A Horse With No Name Personally, I like their original 1972 version better, but they still sound great today. Their first album, titled 'America' was released in Europe with only moderate success and without this song. But the producer, Ian Samwell was looking for a song that would be popular in both the US and Europe. He helped the group to record this song and then persuaded Warner Brothers to re-release the album with the song included. The original song title was 'Desert Song', but was renamed at Samwell's suggestion. It was written on a rainy day in England and was intended to capture the feel of the hot, dry desert Dewey Bunnell remembered from his childhood at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Bunnell's voice sounded so much like Neil Young's, that after Neil's father heard it, he called his son and asked him when he had recorded it! One thing that I think is funny is the line that included '...the heat was hot.' I mean, what else can heat be? Anyhow...I still love this song!

Fool On The Hill 1990 Getback Concert Tommy7's Beatles clips got me to thinking about one of my favorite songs, Paul's 'Fool on the Hill', that was recorded in 1967. This clip was taken from the 1990 'Getback' Concert. It's funny how there was always talk about exactly what some of these songs meant. With this song, Paul stated that he 'was writing about someone like Maharishi' - a person who is called a fool by many but is in fact wise. In Alistair Taylor's book, 'Yesterday', Taylor wrote about a mysterious incident involving a man who inexplicably appeared near him and Paul during a walk on Primrose Hill, and then disappeared again, soon after they had conversed about the existence of God. This allegedly prompted the writing of the song.

Does This Remind You of any Rock Bands We Know Rock stars need beef. They can play forever with red meat and groupies. Here's a funny Public Sevice spot from the United Kingdom about how much energy meat protein provides.

Greta Garbo laughs in Ninotchka 1939 My favourite scene from one of the many great movies that Ernst Lubitsch directed. One of the reasons why I love all films! Greta Garbo plays this tough, cold, extremely serious Russian who ends up being a lovely, shiny, funny woman, full of love and full of life. Starring beautiful Greta Garbo and the great Melvyn Douglas.

Umpire Ed Hurley on Whats My Line American League baseball umpire Ed Hurley appeared as a challenger on What's My Line in this episode from October 4, 1953. In the early days of What's My Line, the panelists were each permitted a 'free guess' as to what the contestant's occupation was. Even though Hurley signed in with the alias 'John Doe,' Dorothy Kilgallen correctly guessed Hurley's job. (Hurley relates a funny story about an incident that occurred that day in the fifth game of the World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees.)

Controversial Dairy Queen Commercial This commercial for Dairy Queen has been airing in Canada. (I don't know if it has been shown in the United States.) Predictably, some people want it yanked off the air. Personally, I think it's funny. You be the judge.

For Old Fart Michael Richards on Fridays A younger Michael Richards as 'Combat Kid' on ABC's 'Fridays'. This was what SNL used to be, high energy, edgy and hip. SNL had become tedious and chances are that if you thought the same about Friday's you were just too young to understand the comedic references. SNL had become a media institution at that point, like Rolling Stone, which used to be considered part of The Underground Press, and if you had a media product to peddle it was simply a base that had to be touched by the star or written into the sketches. Friday's didn't care about any of that. From the announcer's screaming greeting 'Liiiiiiiiiive, from the Los Angeles basin!' to music by that day's hippest bands, Friday's showcased some of the most outrageous comedy to be found on TV. Most people remember Darrow Igus's Rasta Gourmet 'Do we bake it?' 'No no no no!' 'Do we fry it?' 'No no no no!' 'til finally 'We SMOKE it!' 'ya ya ya ya', exclaimed Igus' gourmet, whose only spice was Ganja. Michael Richard's Battle Boy got sicker and sicker as he developed the character, finally taking his little Sister hostage, burying her in the ground and threatening to torture her Barbie. Then there were the times he set his Army men on fire, complete with simulated screams. Very bizarre, but funny!
