1942 Coca-Cola Ad Coca-Cola ad from 1942. Great graphics. Too bad it didn’t say, ‘This Coke’s for you!’ When a nickel was worth something! It’s still Delicious and Refreshing… Just takes a few more nickels.

You Were On My Mind by We Five We Five's only other chart hit aside from "You Were On My Mind" was "Let's Get Together," which reached #31 on the Billboard Hot 100. I didn't have to look up the release date of this song, it was 1965, the year I graduated High School and had a dream of joining the Peace Corps. Never happened. Of course you recognize Fred Astaire, who hosted Hollywood Palace that night. And the clothes and faces of that group, so fresh and clean, definitely not the grunge look that took over later on!

Weird cigarette ad Somebody came up with the idea of comparing fresh eggs to fresh Old Gold cigarettes. (You have to chuckle at the rooster offering the hen a smoke.)

Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II - 1953 I was surprised to discover no one had yet posted a clip of Queen Elizabeth's coronation--so I took the liberty of doing it. On February 6, 1952, George VI, the reigning monarch of the British Commonwealth, died from smoking-related health problems. He was just 56 years old. By the rules of succession, his eldest daughter, 25-year-old Elizabeth, became the new Queen. She was making a goodwill tour of Kenya when she learned she was the new British monarch. Her ceremonial coronation took more than a year to plan. It finally occurred on June 2, 1953. Here is a four-minute clip of her receiving the various symbols of power. Because coronations happen so rarely--and this is the most recent--few people realize how religious the ceremony is. (The monarch is supposed to be "the Defender of the Faith.") Recorded for posterity in spectacularly rich color, the film looks like it could have been shot yesterday--not in 1953. Because satellite broadcasting was not yet a reality, special arrangements were made for North American TV viewers to see the event as soon as possible. The undeveloped film of the ceremony was put aboard a Canadian fighter jet. A technician developed the film in a dark room while the plane was over the Atlantic. About five hours after the event occurred, the airplane landed in Canada. The freshly developed film was rushed to a CBC broadcast studio where it aired throughout Canada. American networks picked up the CBC's feed. Elizabeth II recently celebrated her 89th birthday. If she lives past the first week of September 2015, she will surpass Queen Victoria (her great-great-grandmother) as the longest-reigning monarch in British history. There's no reason to believe she won't attain that milestone. By all accounts Elizabeth II enjoys excellent health, she is still quite active, and her mother lived to be 102 years old.

Peter Brady Volcano One of the most famous scenes in the five-year run of The Brady Bunch was Peter Brady's volcano erupting all over Marcia's stuck-up schoolmates. It was actually just a subplot of a 1972 episode that centered around Marcia adjusting to high school titled Today I Am A Freshman.

The Freshman 1925 Myopic Harold Lloyd stars as THE FRESHMAN. He's sooooooooo excited about going to college that he has been working to earn spending money, practicing college yells, and learning a special way of introducing himself that he saw in a movie. When he arrives at Tate University, he soon becomes the target of practical jokes and ridicule (sounds current, doesn't it?)

1884 Political Cartoon Think presidential election campaigns are nasty now? They're quite tame compared to the good old days. In 1884 the Democrats learned that Republican candidate Grover Cleveland was making chid support payments to a young woman named Maria Halpirn. Cleveland admitted he may have been the child's father, but there were numerous other prominent men who had sampled the horizontal refreshments in the willing Miss Halpirn's boudoir. (Cleveland apparently took responsbility because he was the only bachelor among Miss Halpirn's plentiful beaus!) Democrats mocked Cleveland with the chant, 'Ma! Ma! Where's my pa?' After Cleveland won the election, the Dems added, 'Gone to the White House...ha, ha, ha!'
