Siege of Leningrad Durng the Second World War, German forces surrounded the historic city of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) from August 1941 through January 1944. The siege resulted in the deaths of more than one million Russians, mostly due to starvation and disease. He is some archival film chronicling the misery of everyday life during history's worst siege.

Hymn To The Fallen With Remembrance Sunday coming around and the Poppy appeal in full swing I thought I'd add my thanks to all those who served and still serve in the armed forces. Freedom is a word thrown about too easily but for these brave people who knows what our world would be like? 'Lest we forget'.

The Pruitts Of Southampton starred Phyllis Diller A 1966 "zany" sitcom, "The Pruitts Of Southampton" starred the mad cap Phyllis Diller! Unfortunately low ratings forced ABC to retool the show and in January 1967 the show was re-titled "The Phyllis Diller Show" and moved it from Tuesday's at 9pm to Friday's at 9:30pm! I guess the damage was done because by the end of the season the "Pruitts" were cancelled:-( Silly sitcom yes, but no sillier than The Lucy Show over on CBS! BTW the exterior shot of the Pruitts home is actually the Biltmore Estate in NC!

Victoria Cross Winner Joseph Kaeble The Victoria Cross is the most difficult military medal in the world to attain. To be considered for a VC, one has to be a member of a British Commonwealth country's armed forces and perform an exceptionally brave feat in the face of the enemy. Some of the heroics of Canada's 94 VC winners almost defy belief. Consider how 26-year-old Corporal Joseph Kaeble won his VC.

Profumo Scandal 1963 The British love a good sex scandal or a good political scandal, so the combination of the two was irresistible in 1963. That year it was revealed that John Profumo, the British Secretary of State for War, who was married, had, in 1961, been having an affair with a much younger showgirl named Christine Keeler (pictured here). What made this especially troublesome for Profumo was that Keeler had also been liberally sharing her renowned horizontal pleasures with Yevgeny Ivanov, a naval attache to the Soviet Union's London embassy. During the height of the Cold War, the potential for dangerous pillow talk was a bigtime security breach. When the affair leaked out, Profumo at first denied the charges in parliament. Three months later he admitted they were true and was forced to resign. His prime minister, Harold MacMillan, himself resigned due to poor health a month later. It was undoubtedly exacerbated by the priapic shenanigans of Profumo. Keeler didn't come out of the scandal unscathed: She served nine months in the sneezer for perjury. The British government's report on the scandal became a national best-seller.

Boston Bruins Early 1970s Scoring Stars The Boston Bruins were a formidable offensive force in the early 1970s. During the 1970-71 season, the team averaged an unheard of 5.1 goals per game. For the first time ever, the top four scorers in the NHL were all from the same team. Three of them were the members of this Bruins' line: Wayne Cashman, Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge. (Some fellow named Bobby Orr was the fourth.) The same foursome copped the top four scoring spots in 1973-74 too.

Swastika Name Controversy There is a Canadian town (located in northern Ontario) that bears the odd name of Swastika. Founded in 1904, it began as a mining community. No one is quite sure about the origin of the town's name. When Naziism was on the rise in the 1930s, the government of Ontario forced the 600 people of Swastika to accept Winston as a new name for the town. The people rebelled, tore down the Winston sign on the highway, and replaced it with another Swistika sign that carried the message: 'To hell with Hitler. We had the name first.'
