The Army's Manhattan Engineer District, which designed, developed and tested the first atomic bomb, embarked on a nuclear testing program in 1946 at the newly established Pacific Proving Ground in the Marshall Islands area. It's not a pleasant video, but it's part of our history.

Bob Seger's hit from 1978, was great by itself, but most of us remember hearing it while we watched the scene of Tom Cruise sliding across the floor in his Fruit of the Looms from Risky Business. Fortunately, this clip still contains some good footage of Seger and his Silver Bullet Band.

Here's some rare footage: the funeral procession of President William McKinley who was assassinated in 1901. The rare film shows the casket being taken from the president's home in Canton, Ohio, to a church for the funeral service, and then from the church to a hearse.

A bit of classic Johnny Carson on his earlier show "Who Do You Trust" from 1959. These were live segments. When you're watching a live television show you never quite know what will happen. Unlike most 50's TV footage that exists on grainy kinescope film, this footage comes from early B&W quad videotape which is a rarity with any 50's show. This footage was featured on a program from 1983 called "Life's Most Embarrassing Moments" hosted by John Ritter.

u can see where that urban legand might have gotten started . .(as u'll see from the brief footage) . . according to the A&E Network "Biography", after completing a dance number, Carmen unknowingly suffered a mild heart attack, and nearly collapsed. Durante was at her side, and helped keep her on her feet. She laughed "I'm all out of breath" and Durante replied "Dat's OK, honey, I'll take yer lines!" Carmen laughed again, quickly pulled herself together and finished the show. At the end of the broadcast, she danced out the door, turned to the audience, blew a big kiss, and was gone. "The Brazilian Bombshell" died by the following morning, at the age of 46. The official cause of death given on her death certificate was from untreated toxemia (later known as pre-eclampsia), and heart failure stemming from a pregnancy. . .

Original footage from May 6, 1937 of the German zeppelin Hindenburg bursting into flames and crashing as it was preparing to land at Lakehurst Naval Base in New Jersey. This was the first major disaster captured on film as it happened. Remarkably, most of the people onboard survived. Of the 97 passesngers and crew, only 35 people perished. (One member of the ground crew was killed too.) The cause of the fire has never been determined. The Hindenburg was doomed once the fire started because it used highly flammable hydrogen as a lift gas. It only took 34 seconds for the ship to burn. This catastrophe effectively ended the era of zeppelin travel.

Now this is pretty strange. Camel News Caravan was the first regular television news program in the United States, running from 1949 to 1956. And, as this clip from Granada's 1985 documentary series 'Television' shows, they had their own unique way of presenting stories they had no footage for. This is so shockingly amateur, it almost makes Fox News look like a proper news service...almost.
