Le Petomane - Professional Farter Le Pétomane was the stage name of French flatulist (professional farter) Joseph Pujol. He was famous for his remarkable control of the abdominal muscles which enabled him to fart at will. His stage name combines the French verb péter, 'to fart' with the -mane, '-maniac' suffix, which translates to 'fartomaniac'. Pujol was 'gifted' in the sense that he was able to inhale water or air into his rectum and then control the release of it using his sphincter muscles (avoiding any associated odor). When Pujol joined the army he told his fellow soldiers about his special ability, and repeated it for their amusement, sucking up water from a pan into his rectum and then projecting it through his anus up to several yards. He then found that he could suck in air as well. Although a baker by profession, Pujol would entertain his customers by imitating musical instruments, and claim to be playing them behind the counter. Pujol decided to try his talent on the stage, and debuted in Marseille in 1887. After his act proved successful, he proceeded to Paris, where he took the act to the Moulin Rouge in 1892. Some of the highlights of his stage act involved sound effects of cannon fire and thunderstorms, as well as playing 'O Sole Mio' and 'La Marseillaise' on an ocarina through a rubber tube in his anus. He could also blow out a candle from several yards away. He performed before various VIPs, including the Prince of Wales, King Leopold II of the Belgians, and Sigmund Freud. In 1894, as a star attraction at the Moulin Rouge, Pujol was earning 20,000 francs per performance. In the following decade Pujol tried to 'refine' his acts to make them 'gentler.' One of his favorite numbers was a rhyme about a farm which he himself composed--and which he punctuated with the usual anal renditions of the animals' sounds. The climax of Pujol's act was his farting impression of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Debralee Scott Debralee Scott was an actress best known for her role as Rosalie 'Hoty' Totsie on the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter. Her first film appearance came shortly after her 18th birthday in 1971. It was an uncredited role as a nude corpse in the Clint Eastwood cop flick Dirty Harry. At age 22 she found fame on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, playing Mary's sister, Cathy Shumway. In 1975-76 Scott appeared on the first season of the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter as the lone female sweathog. Later she had a role in the Donna Pescow sitcom Angie, playing Angie's younger sister, Marie Falco. Among her other credits were the 1973 feature film American Graffiti and the 1974 film Earthquake. Scott also regularly appeared as a celebrity panelist on Match Game between 1976 and 1982. Scott continued to act, appearing in two Police Academy movies, but she later retired from acting and became an agent for a company in New York City called Empowered Artists. The last few years of Scott's life were replete with tragedy: Scott's fiancé, Port Authority police officer John Dennis Levi, died during the 9/11 attacks. In March 2005, Scott moved from Brooklyn to Amelia Island, Florida to care for her ailing elder sister, Carol Anne, a producer who had worked on many Robert Altman films. Soon after her arrival in Florida, Scott collapsed and lingered in a coma for several days before waking. Since doctors could not ascertain what caused the coma, she was released two days later. Three days later, on April 5, 2005, she took a nap and never woke up. She was three days past her 52nd birthday. Despite an autopsy, the cause of death remained uncertain. Scott's body was cremated. Her sister died of heart failure on July 13, 2006. In an interview shortly after Debralee's death, her mother attributed her daughter's passing to alcoholism that sprang from her despondency over her fiancé's death.

Battle of Santiago - 1962 World Cup One of the dirtiest sports events ever to take place was a 1962 World Cup match between Chile and Italy. This BBC clip shows how out-of-control the situation became. On May 22, 1960 Chile was rocked with a devastating earthquake that measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. At the same time the earthquake struck, Chile had been lobbying FIFA to host the 1962 World Cup. Despite the enormous tragedy--and perhaps because of it--FIFA was persuaded by an emotional appeal by the Chilean organizers and won the right to host the tournament. Several Italian journalists criticized Chile's ability to host such an important event. They went too far by insulting everything to do with the South American country, including the virtue of its women. All Italians became hated in Chile. The journalists were forced to flee the country. An Argentinian reporter, mistaken for an Italian, was severely beaten by a mob. Of course Italy and Chile were drawn into the same group so they had to play one another in Santiago on June 2. In presenting recorded match highlights for the UK, BBC reporter David Coleman minces no words about the brutal spectacle that occurred that day.
