Richard Speck Murders 1966 On July 13, 1966, one of the most horrific crimes in American history occurred: Eight women aged between 21 and 23 were tortured and killed in a Chicago dormitory by Richard Speck. They were all student nurses who were a month away from graduation. The 24-year-old Speck (pictured here at his trial) was a lifelong felon whose lengthy criminal record included violent sexual assaults. On the night of the murders, Speck systematically killed his victims by strangulation or stabbing over a period of several hours. He also raped the eighth victim. Speck may have lost track of how many women were in the dorm room. A potential ninth victim, Cora Amurao, wriggled out of her bindings and hid under a bed while Speck's killing spree went on in another room. Amurao later identified Speck in court. Speck was found guilty and sentenced to die in the Illinois electric chair. The death sentence was later commuted on constitutional grounds. Instead Speck was given a 1,200-year sentence at Statesville Prison. For years Speck denied having any memories of the killings. However, in a 1978 interview he confessed to remembering everything. In a 1988 prison videotape, Speck was seen partying with fellow prisoners who were high on illegal drugs. The video recorded Speck mocking his victims. Portions of the video were broadcast nationally in 1996, increasing the support for capital punishment. By that time Speck was dead; he had died of a heart attack in prison on December 5, 1991, a day before his 50th birthday. No family member came forward to claim his body.

Our Gang - Stymie Matthew Beard played Stymie in the Our Gang films. He acquired his nickname from director Robert McGowan who was 'stymied' by his inability to control the five-year-old newcomer. Stymie, in efffect, replaced Farina as the Gang's black character. He was witty--always ready with a quip. Stymie got his trademark oversize bowler hat from Stan Laurel. Stymie's tenure on Our Gang ran from the early talkies to the Spanky/Alfalfa heyday. Stymie came from a family of 13 children; a handful of Stymie's siblings and his mother had small Our Gang roles. After leaving showbiz, Stymie descended into drug abuse, but he cleaned himself up in rehab. He spent the remainder of his days lecturing on the evils of drugs. In early 1981 Stymie suffered a stroke just after his 56th birthday. He died of pneumonia shortly thereafter.

Shocking Blue- Venus Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band from The Hague, the Netherlands, formed in 1967. Their biggest hit, "Venus," went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970, and the band had sold 13.5 million discs by 1973, but the group disbanded in 1974. Bet you thought it was a male vocal like me-NOPE! Mariska Veres had a very powerful contralto voice, distinct from other females. She did not smoke, drink, or experiment with drugs. When she joined Shocking Blue she made it clear to the other band members that romantic relationships were not going to happen.

Tennis Prodigy Jennifer Capriati Tennis prodigy Jennifer Capriati was just shy of her fourteenth birthday when she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1990. Her father and one-time coach, Stefano, wanted Jennifer to turn pro at 13 but the WTA's rules would not allow for anyone to play in a professional event until the month of her fourteenth birthday. (Jennifer's birthday is March 29, 1976.) With much fanfare she reached the final of her first two pro tourneys and was ranked eighth in the world by the end of the year. She won a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and things looked totally promising. However, Capriati had a disappointing 1993. By 1994 she had been arrested for shoplifting a $35 ring and marijuana possession. To prevent further 'burn-out cases' among young players, the WTA instituted rules restricting the number of events players under 16 could enter. A Capriati comeback had moderate success, but Capriati was out of tennis by 2004 at age 28. On June 28, 2010, Capriati was recovering from an overdose of prescription drugs, according to a family spokesman.

The Beast of Chicago - 19th Century Serial Killer Outwardly mild H.H. Holmes was actually a brutal and ruthless nineteenth-century serial killer who rightfully earned the moniker 'The Beast of Chicago.' From 1888 to 1894 Holmes killed a minimum of 27 victims and perhaps more than 200. In 1886 Holmes began working at a drugstore at the corner of South Wallace and West 63rd Street in Chicago. He eventually became the proprietor after the former owner mysteriously disappeared. The drugstore did quite well, and Holmes — who became known as Dr. Holmes — used the profits to build himself a three-story tall, city-block long, home across the street. It was Holmes' 'murder castle.'--equipped with acid vats, trap doors, secret entrances, and gas chambers. Holmes lured people to the castle, killed them, and sold their skeletons to medical professionals. He was eventually hanged, but not before being convicted of 27 murders, and suspected of at least 173 more. Erik Larson’s award-winning 2003 book, The Devil in the White City, told Holmes’ twisted tale so well that Leonardo DiCaprio purchased the rights to the film; he’s expected to play Holmes.
