Movie Legends Jane Russell Jane Russell was born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell in Minn on June 21, 1921. She first became interested in drama in high school, and in 1940, was signed to a seven year contract by millionaire Howard Hughes, who arranged for her motion picture debut in The Outlaw (1943), a story about Billy the Kid that went to great lengths to showcase her voluptuous figure. Although the movie was completed in 1941, it was released for a limited showing two years later. There were problems with the censorship of the production code over the way her ample cleavage was displayed. When the movie was finally passed, it had a general release in 1946. Together with Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth, Russell personified the sensuously contoured sweater girl look and became a popular pin-up with Service men during World War II. She went on to perform in an assortment of roles, which included playing Calamity Jane in The Paleface (1948); Mike Delroy in Son of Paleface (1952), Gentlemen Marry Blondes,The Revolt of Mamie Stover, Fate is the Hunter and many more. Though her screen image was that of a sex goddess, her private life lacked the sensation and scandal that followed other actresses of the time, such as Lana Turner. Although in her autobiography, Jane admitted that she had survived two attempted rapes un-harmed, that her first marriage had been speckled with adultery and violence, and that she had been an alcoholic since she was a teenager. She also revealed that in addition to this, however, she was also a born-again Christian, which was one of the things that had helped her cope. Jane Russell currently lives on the Central Coast of California.

Timex Sinclair 1000 Computer Back in 1982 the Timex Corp. and Sinclair research (of Britain,) teamed up and produced the Timex Sinclair 1000. It was a low-priced introduction to home computers. It sported 2K of onboard RAM, (yes, 2K! 2 kilobytes of memory!) You could also purchase a 16K add-on memory module called a RAM Pack, (lower right in the picture,) which increased the memory to 18K. I believe there was also a 64K RAM Pack available later. The ones sold in Britain were known as the ZX 81. It had no display but you could hook it up to the VHF antenna connections on the back of your television set. It also didn't have any sound. The operating system was a modified version of the BASIC computer language and it gave a lot of people, including me, their first taste of computer programming. There were a number of programs that you could buy for it. They were all on cassette tapes. What you would do is connect the unit to your TV set, plug your cassette tape player into it and put whatever program you might have into the tape player. You had to turn the volume off on your cassette player because the programming code was just one continual screeching sound. I had a cassette tape that had a few different programs on it. All of the characters in the programs were block-headed type graphics, but they actually would walk across the screen and even jump up and down. Cool stuff back then. I remember this costing me $29, as the store I bought it at was getting rid of them. I believe the original selling price was $99. I also bought the 16K RAM Pack for $25. I've kept it all these years in good condition thinking that someday it would be worth something, and I was right. They're selling for about 10 bucks on eBay! Win a few, lose a few. Ironically, these things have somewhat of a cult following, and I've even heard of clubs dedicated to the TS-1000!

September Morn Controversy A painting of a nude maiden standing shin deep in a lake created a major scandal in America in 1913. Matinee de Septembre (September Morn) was painted by French artist Paul Emile Chabas over three summers, ending in 1912. The next year, when it was in the window of a Chicago art gallery, a complaint was issued to the mayor's office and the owner of the gallery was subsequently charged with indecency. He beat the rap. Two months later a similar controversy erupted in New York City when the painting was displayed by another art dealer. Anthony Comstock, a self-appointed crusader against vice, vowed to file obscenity charges against the man but never followed through. The surrounding publicity naturally made September Morn the most sought after piece of art in America. Thousands of lithograph reproductions were made in the next decade. The painting is often denounced as kitsch by art critics who claim it lacks contrast, co-ordinated lines, and a worthy subject. Today the original painting is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Emmett Till Murder 1955 One of the most despicable incidents in the era of the Jim Crow South occurred in the summer of 1955. Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago, was visiting a great uncle in rural Money, Mississippi. Till, who was unused to the Deep South's severe racial segregation policies, made the fatal mistake of flirting with Carolyn Bryant, an attractive married white woman who ran a general store in Money with her husband, Roy. Depending on which version of the story you believe, Till may have whistled at Carolyn Bryant, grabbed her wrist, asked her for a date, or playfully called her 'baby.' Whatever the case, the incident resulted in vigilanteism. At least two men took Till from his uncle's home at gunpoint, beat him severely, shot him, weighted down Till's body, and tossed it into the Tallahatchie River. It was found by fishermen three days later. Two men (Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam) were brought to trial. They were found not guilty by an all-white jury that deliberated for a little more than an hour. The two suspects later admitted to the crime after being paid $4,000 by Look Magazine for their story. Till's mother put her son's grotesquely bloated and battered body on display in an open casket before his funeral. Pictures of Till's corpse appeared in many newspapers around the world. Some estimates say that 50,000 mourners filed past his casket. Many historians claim the uproar surrounding the Emmett Till case instigated the Civil Rights movement. Milam and Bryant both died of cancer in the early 1990s. They remained unrepentant about the crime until their deaths.

Robert DeNiro An Actors Actor This is a short, and very brief summary of some of DeNiro's greatest and most classical works. It's by no means a full representation of his work, as it is only four minutes long , but I feel these scenes best displayed his power, intensity, and range of abilities. (PG)
