Death of Len Bias Len Bias should have been one of basketball's greatest players. Instead, he became a poster boy for everything that was wrong with big-time sports. The athletic Bias was a star player at the University of Maryland. On June 17, 1986, the 22-year-old Bias was drafted second overall by the NBA champion Boston Celtics. Forty hours later he was dead from a cocaine overdose. Bias' death had a ripple effect. The Celtics were planning to rebuild their aging team around Bias, but instead Boston did not win another NBA championship until 2008. The basketball program at University of Maryland was thrown into turmoil after it was discovered that Bias' drug use was well known and he was 21 credits short of graduating despite using up all his academic eligibilty. Maryland's coach and athletic director were terminated that October for engaging in coverups that allowed Bias' habitual drug use and weak academic performance to go unchecked.

Andrea True Connection More More More Andrea True (born July 26, 1943, Nashville, Tennessee) is a former adult film star who was also a singer during the disco era. During her heyday as a porn actress, True was hired by a real estate business on the Caribbean island of Jamaica to produce a commercial. During her stay, a political crisis gripped the island and no one was allowed to leave with any money. Not wanting to lose her hard-earned money, True asked her friend, record producer Gregg Diamond to travel to the island and produce a track for her, which she would finance locally. Diamond arrived with a composition in hand, to which True added lyrics. The result of their collaboration was the now disco classic "More, More, More". in 1976 ultimately remixed by producer Tom Moulton, More, More, More became a favorite in discos and nightclubs. It ultimately reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and a full album with the same title soon followed. The single also reached the charts in Great Britain (where it peaked at # 5) and Germany (where it peaked at # 9).

Roller Boogie Here's one that needs to be included in any 1970s time capsule: The trailer for the 1979 film Roller Boogie. (In case you missed it, this Linda Blair flick was designed to cash in on the short-lived roller disco craze.)

Bernard Goetz Subway Vigilante Bernard (Bernhard) Goetz was riding a New York City subway train on December 22, 1984. Four black youths, aged 18 and 19, menacingly surrounded him and demanded money. Goetz, who had previously been mugged twice, opened fire with a small-calibre handgun. One shot severed the spinal cord of one of the assailants, permanently paralyzing him. The other three were less seriously wounded. Goetz fled the subway car but eventually turned himself into police nine days later. Dubbed the Subway Vigilante by New York's newspapers, Goetz was hailed as a hero by crime-weary New Yorkers after it was discovered the four youths all had long criminal records and admitted to being on their way to steal money from machines at a video arcade. (At the time, an average of 38 crimes were committed in the New York subway system each day!) Goetz was only convicted of a third-degree gun possession felony and served eight months in jail. The three able-bodied felons all committed serious crimes afterwards. One was sentenced to 25 years for raping and sodomizing a pregnant woman.
