Sony TC 630 Tape Recorder This is a Sony TC-630 reel to reel tape player. I had one of them back in the mid '70s. I bought it so that I could record a two man group that my buddy and I had. He played a 12 string guitar and I played a harmonica and the drums, (not at the same time... I wasn't that coordinated.) For those of you who might have had one of these wonderful machines you'll remember that it had what Sony called "Sound on Sound" capabilities. Simply put, that meant that after you had made a recording you could go back to whatever point you wanted to and record something else on top of what you had just recorded, without erasing your original recording. What I would do is record my friend and I playing a song, with me on my harmonica, usually playing something by John Denver. When we were through I would go back to the beginning of the song and using headphones, listen to what we had just recorded while playing my drums using the Sound on Sound function. When we would play back the recording it would play everything just as if we had three members in the group! What a great machine this was! It weighed about a zillion pounds, though.

Denny McLain Bob Gibson Musical Duet Here's an odd clip from the Ed Sullivan Show of October 13, 1968: Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers performs on the organ. He is then joined by Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals on guitar. The Tigers had just beaten the Cards in the World Series three days earlier.

Did You Ever Have One Pet Rocks were a 1970s fad conceived in Los Gatos, California by an advertising executive, Gary Dahl. The first Pet Rocks were ordinary gray pebbles bought at a builder's supply store and marketed as if they were live pets. The fad lasted only about six months, ending with the Christmas season in December 1975; but in its short run, the Pet Rock made Dahl a millionaire

For My Friend This is the second song Barbra sang on the Dinah Shore Show in May 1963. The musical intro is rare and has not been heard since. Nice to remember.

September Morn Controversy A painting of a nude maiden standing shin deep in a lake created a major scandal in America in 1913. Matinee de Septembre (September Morn) was painted by French artist Paul Emile Chabas over three summers, ending in 1912. The next year, when it was in the window of a Chicago art gallery, a complaint was issued to the mayor's office and the owner of the gallery was subsequently charged with indecency. He beat the rap. Two months later a similar controversy erupted in New York City when the painting was displayed by another art dealer. Anthony Comstock, a self-appointed crusader against vice, vowed to file obscenity charges against the man but never followed through. The surrounding publicity naturally made September Morn the most sought after piece of art in America. Thousands of lithograph reproductions were made in the next decade. The painting is often denounced as kitsch by art critics who claim it lacks contrast, co-ordinated lines, and a worthy subject. Today the original painting is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

1931 World Series Program This attractive baseball program is from the 1931 World Series. That Fall Classic was a rematch of the 1930 World Series. It pitted the Philadelphia Athletics versus the St. Louis Cardinals. The A's had won the World Series in 1929 and 1930, but the Cards took the '31 tilt in seven games. According to the hand-written notation, this program is from Game Five which was played on October 7 at Philadelphia's Shibe Park. The Cardinals only had one major lineup change from 1930: a 27-year-old rookie outfielder named Pepper Martin. Had there been a World Series MVP award in 1931, Martin would have won it. He led the Cards in several offensive categories--including stolen bases. Martin also made a crucial running catch to snuff out a ninth-inning Philadelphia rally in Game Seven. This was the last World Series appearance by the Philadelphia A's. The next time the Athletics appeared in a World Series was in 1972 when they were the Oakland A's.

Pierre Trudeau Just Watch Me This 1970 clip of Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau is probably unknown to Americans, but it's very famous in Canada. In October 1970, a radical French-Canadian separatist group, the FLQ, began a reign of terror in the province of Quebec. James Cross, a visiting British diplomat, was kidnapped. Shortly afterward, Pierre Laporte, a Quebec cabinet minister, was also kidnapped. (Laporte's dead body was found a few days later.) Prime minister Trudeau responded by invoking Canada's War Measures Act which gave the government extraordinary powers to preserve order. The civil libertarians didn't like it, but it was the most popular thing Trudeau ever did. Watch him as he fields questions from a left-leaning TV reporter.
