Cleft-chinned, steely-eyed, and ruggedly handsome, Kirk Douglas is a star of international cinema who rose from being "the ragman's son" (the name give to his best-selling 1988 autobiography) of Russian-Jewish ancestry to become a bona fide superstar. When I was 7 yrs old my grandmother (being a big fan) took me to see my first Kirk Douglas film, Man Without a Star, and he became my first hero. If you're also a fan, I hope this clip will bring back a lot of fond memories.

my grandmother loved all the old detective magazines . . i didn't realize at the time how risque they were! Here's a little history: "By far the most famous publication in the United States by this name was officially The National Police Gazette, although commonly referred to as simply the Police Gazette. It was founded in 1845 by George Wilkes, a journalist and sometime transcontinental railroad booster. The editor for most of the 19th century was Richard K. Fox, an immigrant from Ireland. Ostensibly devoted to matters of interest to the police, it was more often a tabloid-like publication, with lurid coverage of murders, Wild West outlaws, and sport."

Beginning in 1973 Telly Savalas used his considerable charisma to breathe a little life into this look at a New York detective. Helped by some good location filming in the Big Apple and fairly realistic plots, not to mention that "New York" attitude, Kojak will always stand as an above average 70's cop show.

Television evangelists seemed to be in the news for a lot of unholy behavior in the 1980s. In 1988 Jimmy Swaggart got caught with his pants down (literally). Marvin Gorman, another minster, had been exposed by Swaggart in 1986 for having an affair with one of his parishioners. Two years later Gorman got his revenge. Gorman hired a private detective to follow Swaggart. The private eye managed to take incriminating photographs of Swaggart cavorting in a motel with a New Orleans prostitute. Remember Swaggart's tearful confession? Here it is.

A clip from the late 40's TV series, 'The Morey Amsterdam Show', also featuring a young Art Carney. This scene features some then-topical jokes about late 40's TV. 'The Morey Amsterdam Show' was a sitcom/variety show that aired on the DuMont Television Network. The show ran from 1948-1950, and almost every episode is preserved at UCLA. This is quite lucky, since very little TV programming from the 40's still exists, and little DuMont Network programming still exists. The DuMont Television Network broadcasted from 1946-1956, and is largely forgotten. Some popular DuMont TV programs included 'Captain Video and His Video Rangers', 'Life is Worth Living', 'Rocky King Detective', 'Cavalcade of Stars' and 'The Plainclothesman'. It's believed that some time after DuMont went out of business, Its archive was dumped into an upper NY bay. Still, Some DuMont broadcasts still exist, including over 200 kinescopes at UCLA, and more at the Museum of Television and Radio.

Whiz Kids was a television series which aired from 5 October 1983 to 2 June 1984 in the United States. The show was about the adventures of a group of teenagers who worked as amateur computer experts and detectives. The show was basically a copy of ideas from WarGames, toned down and expanded for TV.
The series starred Max Gail as the group's mentor. The cast also included Matthew Laborteaux as Richie Adler, Dan O'Herlihy, Todd Porter as Hamilton Parker and Andrea Elson as Alice.
Richie Adler lived with his mother and sister - his father worked away from home. Periodically, Richie's father would send him obsolete pieces of electronic and computer equipment including in one episode, a programmable robot called Herman. Richie collected these pieces of equipment from his father and connected them together to form "RALF" - his pet name for his computer system which included, in one episode, a primitive webcam.
The show was based on Richie and his friends coming across mysteries which they (mainly Richie) would attempt to solve using his computer skills with RALF's power. Guidance was provided by Farley (their mentor).
The series aired on CBS. Initially, it aired Wednesday nights, but it began airing Saturday nights on 7 January 1984, replacing Cutter to Houston.

You know, sir, it's a funny thing. All my life I kept running into smart people. I don't mean smart like you or the rest of the people in this house. You know what I mean. In school, there were a lot of smarter kids. And when I first joined the force, they had some very clever people there. And I could tell right away that it wouldn't be easy to make detective as long as they were around. But I figured, if I worked harder than they did, put in more time, read the books, kept my eyes open, maybe I could make it happen. And I did. And I really love my work, sir.

One of my favorite TV detective shows was Ellery Queen, starring Jim Hutton (Timothy's father) as the title character. It only ran for one season on NBC (1975-76) before being axed. This excellent show, set in 1947, invited you to play detective too. It was a real shame when it was cancelled. (The Arts and Entertainment Network carried reruns of this show from 1993 to 1995.)
