GI Joe Nurse Doll One of the most spectacular failures in toy history was the G.I. Joe Nurse figure. In 1967 Hasbro expanded its line of successful G.I. Joe toys. One was the G.I. Nurse Action Girl, a doll so rare that certain models in mint condition still in the box can bring up to $6,000 on todayís collectorsí market. 'The G.I. Joe Nurse is so valuable today because it was released for only one year,' says Sharon Korbeck, editorial director of Toy Shop, a biweekly magazine aimed at toy collectors. 'The figure didnít do very well. Boys werenít interested in a female doll, and girls werenít interested in anything related to G.I. Joe.' Sales also suffered because toy store managers didnít know how to position the doll. Some put her with the G.I. Joe action figures, while others stocked her next to Barbie and her friends. Either way, 50 percent of the prospective market was lost. There are actually two G.I. Joe Nurse figures: one has a dark-colored bag. The other has a white bag. An example of the rarer white-bag doll was highlighted on a season-four episode of Pawn Stars.

26-Inning MLB Game - 1920 The longest game (by innings) in Major League Baseball's long history was a 26-inning, 1-1 tie. It was a National League game between the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Robins played at Braves Field in Boston on May 1, 1920. Amazingly, both starting pitchers--Brooklyn's Leon Cadore and Boston's Joe Oeschger--went the distance. Since night baseball didn't begin in MLB until 1935, the game was stopped by plate umpire Barry McCormick due to impending darkness. It had to be replayed in its entirety, but all the stats from the 26-inning tie counted. Remarkably, by modern standards, the game took only 3 hours and 50 minutes to play. It had started at 3:00 p.m., as was the custom in those days, and ended at 6:50 p.m. Several players unsuccessfully lobbied umpire McCormick to extend the game one more inning so they could say they played the equivalent of three nine-inning games. The press box at Braves Field did not have electric lights so reporters and telegraphers had to submit their accounts of the record-setting game using candlelight. Some trivia from the game: The score had been tied 1-1 since the sixth inning. The attendance was about 3,500. Cadore faced 95 Boston batters. Oeschger pitched to a mere 90 Robins, but his 21 consecutive scoreless innings established a record. Braves' first baseman Walter Holke recorded the ridiculous total of 43 putouts. Boston's second baseman, Charlie Pick, set a record too, but not a positive one: His one-game total of 11 official at-bats without a hit has never been matched. Years later Cadore remembered the aftereffects of the game. "My arm stiffened. I couldn't raise it to comb my hair for three days," he said. "After seven days of rest I was back taking my regular turn. I never had a sore arm before or after the game. I suppose the nervous energy of trying to win the game gave me the strength to keep me going."

Lee Remick One of Hollywood's forgotten beauties was Lee Remick. To moviegoers, she is most famous for her roles in Days of Wine and Roses (1962) and The Omen (1976). A talented stage actress, Remick also was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance as a blind woman terrorized by drug smugglers in Wait Until Dark. Sadly she died on July 2, 1991 of liver and kidney cancer. She was just 55 years old. One of her memorable quotes was, "I make movies for adults. When Hollywood stars making them again, so will I."

Snick Remember when SNICK Premiered? Nickelodeon at night that isnt Nick At Nite? WHAT! THIS IS AMAZING! The thought process of a 6 year old who just found out that Nickelodeon would be on the air until 10 PM on Saturday nights. This was huge for us kids who werent old enough to go out on Saturdays, and it gave us an excuse to beg our parents to let us stay up late. I mean hey, if Nick is still on, theres no way it too late to go to sleep right? Exactly. What a great bargaining chip by Nickelodeon. I remember it seemed like an eternity before SNICK kicked off. That orange couch still comes to mind every time someone talks about what to do on a Saturday night. Short for Saturday Night Nickelodeon ran from August 15, 1992 until August 28, 2004. (not cool, no reason to cancel such a great block, my guess since they were moving everything to Hollywood, this might have been cause and the fact that they lost good writters for these programs..in the 90's it was done right just like some in the 80's when it came to children's entertainment on Nick, this was the place. Today some are good from the 2000-2010 era- Rocket Power, Wild Thronberry's, Sponge Bob, to name a few. The block debuted on Saturday, August 15, 1992, with a pair of Sunday favorites (the preteen-oriented sitcom Clarissa Explains It All and the Nicktoon The Ren and Stimpy Show) and the network premieres of Roundhouse (a musical comedy variety series) and Are You Afraid of the Dark? (a horror anthology series)Ads and bumpers for SNICK featured the programming block's "mascot," dubbed "The Big Orange Couch," in several locales, including in front of the Midnight Society's campfire, Ren and Stimpy's house, and in various locations. It was retired in June 1999, when the iconic couch, stuffed with $25,000 and 6000 cookies, was given away in a contest celebrating Nickelodeon's 20 years on television. In 2006, one of Nickelodeon's celebrities would take over Nickelodeon from Monday to Friday, sitting on the Big Orange Couch. 1992-1994: 8PM Clarissa Explains It All 8:30PM Roundhouse 9PM The Ren & Stimpy Show 9:30PM Are You Afraid of the Dark? 1993 to mid-Summer 1994: 8PM Clarissa Explains It All 8:30PM The Adventures of Pete & Pete 9PM The Ren & Stimpy Show 9:30PM Are You Afraid of the Dark? 10PM Roundhouse 1994-1996: 8PM The Secret World of Alex Mack 8:30PM All That 9PM The Ren & Stimpy Show 9:30PM Are You Afraid of the Dark? Scary Stories 3 More Tales To Chill Your Bones 1991 Yes I know part is the 80's but its in the 90s for the fact that Scary Stories 3 : More Tales To Chill Your Bones came out in 1991 and started me on getting this series in the 90's. Some kids can relate to this and did the same? You know it peaked your interest and you had to get the whole set! LOL Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is a series of three children's books written by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell. The scary stories of the title are pieces of folklore and urban legends collected and adapted by Schwartz. The titles of the books are Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (1981), More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (1984), and Scary Stories 3 : More Tales To Chill Your Bones (1991). The first volume was published in 1981, and the books have subsequently been collected in both a box set and a single volume. There is also an audiobook version of each book, read by George S. Irving. Reprints of the books with new illustrations by Brett Helquist have been announced. This series is listed as being the most challenged series of books from 1990Ė1999 and seventh most challenged from 2000-2009by the American Library Association for its violence. The surreal and nightmarish illustrations contained within are also a frequently challenged component of the original books. To celebrate the books' 30th anniversary, Scholastic re-released them with new illustrations from Brett Helquist, the illustrator of A Series of Unfortunate Events. This has come under criticism from fans of Gammell's illustrations, citing that they are not as effective or as scary as the originals.

9-11 Response - Gander NL The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 showed the dark side of humanity. In contrast, what occurred in Gander, Newfoundland highlighted the finest qualities of humanity. As this NBC clip shows, when the reality of the attacks set in, nearly 40 international and domestic flights scheduled to land in the northeastern U.S. were instead diverted to Gander Airport. For the 10,000 residents of Gander, taking care of "the plane people" suddenly became a collective community project for the next two days. The generosity of the locals left a lasting and overwhelmingly positive impression on the stranded travelers.
