Beauty Parade was the first of Robert Harrison's series of girlie magazines, published in October 1941. At the time Harrison was working for Martin Quigley, the publisher of "Motion Picture Daily" and "Motion Picture Herald", the story goes that Harrison used to paste together Beauty Parade single handedly in the office after the rest of the staff had gone home. Compared to his later titles, Beauty Parade was alot tamer, although it still featured one of main characteristics of all his magazines, the photostory.

Ripley's Believe It Or Not was a regular feature in newspapers for many decades. Its creator, Robert Ripley, hoped to be a professional baseball player but an arm injury ended that dream. Instead, Ripley decided to write about sports. He compiled some odd sports facts and presented them in cartoon form. Ripley intended to call it Champs & Chumps, but settled on Believe It Or Not so he could go beyond sports. His first cartoon panel premiered in the New York Globe on December 19, 1918. At one point, there were 80 million loyal readers of Believe It Or Not in daily newspapers. Much of Ripley's research was done by Norbert Pearlroth. For 52 years, Pearlroth spent 10 hours per day, six days a week in the New York Public Library searching for obscure facts and trivia for Ripley's cartoons!

The infamous headline in the Chicago Daily Tribune that prematurely declared Thomas Dewey the winner of the 1948 U.S. presidential election based on early projections. Harry Truman got a kick out of it.

A is for Apple..B is for Blood and C is for Crip? The Daily News has a disturbing story about gang-member parents indoctrinating their children from birth in gang life. Before they can even speak, some of these tots can flash their signs and are adorned with gang colors and accouterments. Are gang-themed line of onesies far behind?

Gertrude Berg was the mastermind behind all the episodes on radio and TV. 'THE GOLDBERGS' was more of a dramatic series with comedy overtones (especially when it became more of a daily "soap opera" during the late '30s and early '40s, for Procter & Gamble). Gertrude would not fire Philip Loeb from the TV series, even though General Foods and CBS dropped it after a little more than two seasons in 1951. NBC told her in 1952 that either she got rid of Loeb, or the show would never be seen again...

All-powerful newspaper columnist, TV and radio personality Walter Winchell is the mystery challenger on this episode of What's My Line from 1952. At its apex, Winchell's daily gossip column was read by 50 million people. Greatly feared by celebrities, Winchell could make or break a performer's career with one sentence. Winchell did not adjust well to the new medium of television and was pretty much out of business after his home newspaper, the New York Daily Mirror, folded in 1963. During the last couple of years of his life, Winchell was reduced to handing out mimeographed copies of his column to interested passersby. When Winchell died in 1972 fewer than 10 people attended his funeral.

The 1920's, a decade of dissipation, of jazz bands, raccoon coats, bathtub gin, flappers, flagpole sitters, bootleggers, marathon dancers, and bathing beauties. A decade when America truly came of age.

Early on the morning of July 24, 1915, the lake passenger steamer Eastland cast off from the Chicago River dock at the Clark Street Bridge with On board 2,572, all Western Electric Company employees and their families.
What was to have been a pleasant Lake Michigan cruise and picnic quickly turned into Chicago's worst single disaster. As she pulled away from the dock, the Eastland. slowly rolled over on her side and settled on the mud of the river bottom.
Of the 2,572 persons on board, 844+ lost their lives
For the 1,728 who did survive, their lives would be changed forever
This is dedicated to the 1915 Western Electric Family - the 844 who perished and those who survived - to the firefighters, police, and Chicago citizens who rushed to their aid.
your bravery will be remembered!
