It may have been a desirable job but it was not an easy one. Telephone companies had strict rules for all aspects of operators' behavior on the job. Merely to get the job, a woman had to pass height, weight, and arm length tests to ensure that she could work in the tight quarters afforded switchboard operators. Operators had to sit with perfect posture for long hours in straight-backed chairs. They were not permitted to communicate with each other. They were to respond quickly, efficiently, and patiently — even when dealing with the most irascible customers...

October 6th marks the first televised appearance of American Bandstand. I found some interesting trivia concerning the show. It was customary on AB to have Clark perform a mini-interview with the guest band members. Clark says the most difficult interview he performed was with Prince, an unknown at the time of his appearance. Prince was unresponsive and would generally answer his questions with only a hand gesture or a single word. Clark in fact asked Prince how many instruments he played, Prince responded with, "A thousand."
Another famous mini-interview Clark is famous for is one with Madonna, who, when asked what she would like to do 20 years from now, answered coyly, "To rule the world!"
B.B. King and Jerry Lee Lewis were the only recording artists to actually sing on the program. They were uncomfortable with miming their performances and requested that they just perform the songs live on the set. In 1961, Tony Orlando performed his then-hit song "Bless You" with his trousers zipper open!

McDonalds has had a few flops on their menu over the years. None was more costly than the Arch Deluxe fiasco of 1996. McDonald's marketed the sandwich as an adults-only burger. A very odd $100-million advertising campaign was launched to emphasize the point. Commercials featured kids who didn't want anything to do with the burger. (Some even said it was yucky.) Surveys showed the bizarre ad campaign was turning off potential customers from all demographic groups. Moreover, the Arch Deluxe was the highest priced burger on the menu, which did not help sales either. McDonald's then tried to salvage the burger with a more traditional advertising approach: This time the commercials showed McDonald's icon Ronald McDonald enoying the burger while doing adult activities, such as playing golf. It was too late, though. Even coupons allowing people to buy the burger for just a dollar failed to save the Arch Deluxe from extinction. McDonalds discontinued the sandwich in 1997.

i recently had a chance to check out Garden-Opoly. This very fun version of Monopoly uses different breeds of plants instead of properties, with POISON IVY replacing MEDITERRANEAN AVE, and Orchids replacing BOARDWALK. Each player buys garden favorites, collects Clay Pots and trades them in for Greenhouses. Sounds easy enough - but add aphid infestation, water bills and a dandelion outbreak and it becomes a little more difficult... and a lot more fun! Each deed back contains interesting facts such as the appropriate climate, soil and watering for each plant, as well as, fun facts about origin, popularity and varieties. A player may even be elected president of the garden club (always wanted to be famous)... or may be WEEDING, and out of the game for three turns! The custom pewter tokens are: a hand trowel, garden clog, garden gnome, wheel barrow and ladybug...i'm the clog...can't keep my shoes on!

The blue Rollfast skoot was the best wheelie bike I tried.I used to borrow it off my friends sister the gearing was just right.She was also my 1st love until I told her I didn't like Donny Osmond her idol.She dumped me before I was even loaded!The demise of the muscle bike was the stick shift causing injuries.My problem was the gooseneck raising my voice.When B.M.X. hit the scene they had a pad there Why didn't I think of that?About 15 yrs.ago I bought a 3sp. CHOPPER $5.00 at a garage sale in bad shape called a museum in Chicago for it's value sold it to a local bike store for $150 they reconditioned it and it now hangs from their ceiling.The Grey ghost Schwinn when I last checked yrs.ago was worth several 1000 dollars!I owned a Iverson 5sp. muscle bike desgned by George Barris the custom car designer of Batmobile.Green Hornet,Surf woody,Pink Panther,Chipmunk,Munster Koach,Dragula,Beverly Hillbillies,Monkeemobile,General Lee,Knight Rider,Starsky & Hutch,Banachek,etc...He did not design the DeLorean in back to the future,though most beleive he did.LONG story lonnng my bike is worth(was) over $1000.00 Because of George Barris' role in design.

Remember the Sprint Guy?
Until September of 2005, he was the spokescharacter for Sprint wireless phones, the guy who solved pesky cellular problems wherever and whenever they arose. He was ubiquitous, appearing in 155 commercials over a period of six years. More than that, he was an icon of the Internet age, the Mr. Whipple, the Joe Isuzu, the Madge or Mikey of his time. One day The Sprint Guy was gone, dropped like a bad connection. He went away quietly, without making a scene, which is just how you'd expect him to go. He was, it seems, a victim of corporate politics. Sprint bought Nextel for $35 billion, and as a result, things changed. Sprint Guy was great when Sprint was selling its services primarily to household customers. But Nextel began focusing on the business market, and so the company decided they needed a new image. Spring Guy was put on 'hiatus' for an indefinite period.

Of all the symbols associated with Easter, the egg, the symbol of fertility and new life, is the most identifiable. The customs and traditions of using eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries. Originally Easter eggs were painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring and were used in Easter-egg rolling contests or given as gifts. After they were colored and etched with various designs the eggs were exchanged by lovers and romantic admirers, much the same as valentines. In medieval time eggs were traditionally given at Easter to the servants. In Germany eggs were given to children along with other Easter gifts. Different cultures have developed their own ways of decorating Easter eggs. Crimson eggs, to honor the blood of Christ, are exchanged in Greece. In parts of Germany and Austria green eggs are used on Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday). The Slavic people decorate their eggs in special patterns of gold and silver. In Germany and other countries eggs used for cooking where not broken, but the contents were removed by piercing the end of each egg with a needle and blowing the contents into a bowl. The hollow eggs were dyed and hung from shrubs and trees during the Easter Week. The Armenians would decorate hollow eggs with pictures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and other religious designs. At the Jewish Passover Seder, a hard-boiled egg dipped in salt water symbolizes both new life and the Passover sacrifice offered at the Temple in Jerusalem.

Argentina, like the USA, is a country made of immigrants. This Gran Hotel de Immigrantes is the equivalent of USA's Ellis Island. it is where millions of immigrants first came ashore in Argentina. The majority came from Italy and Spain, but many other countries are represented, as well. The Immigrant Hotel is where the people cleared customs and immigration, received food, shelter and medical care. Many people stayed temporarily in the hotel while waiting for family waiting in Argentina to retrieve them. Built in 1905-1911 to replace a smaller building – not at the same site – there is a museum within the main dining hall of the hotel. The complex is on the north side of the Darsena Norte in Puerto Madero.
