AMERICAN PIE Don McLean Recorded in 1971, and released that year on the album of the same name, the single was a number one hit for four weeks in 1972. The song is in itself a history of rock and roll that starts with the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson, Jr. (The Big Bopper) in a plane crash in 1959, and ends in 1970.

W.W. II Lockheed P-38 Ad Here’s one of many examples of our country's ‘hometown’ moral support ads during WWII. This one features a Lockheed P-38 Lightning. This ad appeared in Life Magazine and Popular Mechanics in 1942. Go get’em Maj. Richard Bong! (Richard Ira Bong was America's all-time Ace of Aces, downing 40 enemy planes in the Pacific theater of the war while flying P-38 fighter planes. Bong was killed August 6, 1945, the day the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, when the P-80 Shooting Star he was testing for Lockheed stalled and crashed on take-off.)

Abott and Costello Meet Frankenstein 1940s My favorite movie from these two! Plus the movie had some of my favorite monster actors too. Lon Chaney, Jr., Glen Strange and Bela Lugosi! I have to admit although funny, this movie scared me to nightmares when I watched this re-run as a kid. I would dream all the time that Frankenstein would crash through my wall but that didn't stop me from watching these great monster flicks!

Remembering the Great Buddy Holly on His Birthday A clip from The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Buddy was born Charles Hardin Holley on Sept 7th 1936. He jumped into rock & roll from his background in country and western music. He played the guitar and sang, and also had a strong interest in recording studio production techniques. He's credited with being the first to use overdubbing and double-tracking. Buddy was killed in a plane crash in 1959, along with fellow rockers Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. That fatal plane crash was recalled as "the day the music died" in Don McLean's song "American Pie"... Holly's backing band was known as the Crickets, which inspired Paul McCartney and John Lennon to name their band the Beatles. Francis Ford Coppola borrowed Holly's song title for his 1986 movie Peggy Sue Got Married. We'll always remember you, Buddy, RIP.

Remembering JIM CROCE from 1973 This song, I Got a Name, was released as an album the day after Jim (who was just 30) died on September 20, 1973. He and his songwriter-guitarist,Maury Muehleisen had just completed a concert in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and were flying to Sherman, Texas, along with a comic who was part of their warm up show. The pilot and all passengers were killed instantly at 10:45 PM EST, less than an hour after the end of their last concert. Upon takeoff, the small plane did not gain enough altitude to clear an area of large pecan trees at the end of the runway. The official report from the NTSB stated that the charter pilot, who had severe coronary artery disease, may have suffered a heart attack causing him to crash the plane into the trees on a clear runway with excellent visibility. A later investigation placed sole blame for the accident on pilot error.
