Ernie Kovacs on Whats My Line From 1957, comedian Ernie Kovacs appears as a surprise mystery challenger on What's My Line. At the time, Kovacs was a semi-regular panelist on the show. (Kovacs was supposed to be in Hollywood that Sunday, but he missed his train and decided to be a WML contestant instead!)

Paul McCartney Death Story Remember this balderdash? The strange claim first appeared in Drake University's student newspaper in September 1969. It gathered momentum a month later when Russ Gibb, a Detroit-area deejay, broadcast that Paul McCartney had died in a November 1966 car mishap and had been secretly replaced in the Beatles by the winner of a lookalike contest. The supposed clues to Paul's untimely death could be found by playing Beatles' records backwards, by looking at imagery on album covers, and by examining various song lyrics. Yeah, right.

Tyrone Power on Whats My Line From March 27, 1955, Tyrone Power appears as a mystery challenger on a very strange evening on What's My Line. Why was it so strange? Just to be different, Power arranged for the audience not to applaud when he entered. Also strange that night was the stunningly inept game play of panelist Wally Cox. Cox was so excruciatingly slow at questioning the contestants that he was never allowed on the panel again.

Stella Walsh Gender Controversy Stella Walsh was one of the first female Olympic heroes--but she could never shake the accusations that she was really a man. The masculine-looking Walsh was born in Poland in 1911 and came to the United States before her first birthday. Naturally gifted at sports, she won track and field contests sponsored by a Cleveland newspaper that were supposed to lead to a place on the 1928 American Olympic team. However, the immigration laws of the era said Walsh could not become an American citizen until the age of 21. She toured her homeland in the early 1930s and became hugely popular. She competed for Poland at the 1932 summer Olympics in Los Angeles and won gold in the women's 100 metres. At the 1936 Olympics she finished second to Helen Stephens, who, ironically, had to undergo a medical examination to prove she was a female. In November 1980, television station WKYC was heavily criticized for airing a story that questioned Walsh's gender. A month later the 69-year-old Walsh was murdered in a botched armed robbery at a Cleveland mall. Through a court order, WKYC obtained the coroner's report to vindicate their earlier claims. It said Walsh had male sex organs, no female sex organs, and both XX and XY pairs of chromosomes.

Eye Guess 1968 This is an 8.5-minute clip of an NBC game show, Eye Guess, that ran from 1966 through 1969. (This particular episode is from 1968.) Hosted by Bill Cullen, this daytime program tested contestants on general knowledge plus their abilities to memorize. The first part of the clip is the bonus round for a winning contestant. The second half is the actual game part: After observing a board containing the answers to eight upcoming questions for eight seconds, the contestants had to choose the location of the answers when the corresponding questions were asked.

He defeated Canada's Tommy Burns, the reigning champ, in 14 rounds. The clip ends just before the police intervened to halt the one-sided contest. They also shut off the movie cameras to ensure Burns' moment of defeat wouldn't be preserved on film.
