Drag racing was a "new" thing in the early fifties. It was still an outcast activity seeking the direction needed to ensure its survival as a legitimate, and legal activity. The legions of young men who had a desire to test their homemade cars in open competition would find that direction with the birth of the National Hot Rod Association.
One of the first drag strips to operate on a regular basis was in Reyes own backyard. The Santa Ana drags were conducted at the local airport, and in 1955, a then fourteen-year-old Larry Reyes took his first trip down that historical quarter mile. His mother's Volkswagen was his first ride . . .

This was filmed at the Dome in Brighton, England, UK. They won the competition and it launched them to their international stardom. 1974.

I actually tried this product once. I don't think too many pizzerias were worried about the competition from Chef Boy-Ar-Dee.

Those of you not in the Northeast, Gimbels was the competition to Macys, if you recall the movie Miracle on 34th Street! Gimbels went out of business 1986.

France's Suzanne Lenglen was pretty much invincible in women's tennis in the 1920s, losing only one match of significance in singles from 1914 through 1926. She ruled the sport when the major tournaments were amatuer events only. This photo of Lenglen was taken at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Considered a sex symbol in her heyday, Lenglen turned professional after 1926 and played a series of exhibition matches in the United States that didn't draw very good crowds because Lenglen so outclassed her competition. She died of leukemia in 1938 when she was only 39 years old.

Tamara and Irina Press, two sisters from the old Soviet Union, were dominant in women's athletics during the early 1960s. Tamara (pictured here) was virtually unbeatable in shot put. Irina was an excellent pentathlete and a world-record holder in the 80-metre hurdles. The trouble was they didn't look too feminine. Speculation about the sisters' true gender was always present. Some western sports journalists began secretly referring to the Press sisters as the 'Press brothers.' When the governing body of European athletics began instituting gender testing in 1966, instead of complying, the Press sisters vanished from international competition--never to return. Soviet newspapers reported that they had retired from sports to tend to their ailing mother. When Irina died in 2004, several months went by before her death was officially announced.
