VJ Day Smoochers This famous photo was taken by Life Magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt during the impromptu VJ Day celebrations in New York City's Times Square. For years no one knew who the two anonymous smoochers were. In 1980 Edith Shain came forward, claiming to be the nurse. When the 50th anniversary approached, Carl Muscarello declared himself to be the sailor. The two kissers got together once again in 1995 to recreate their famous pose on Tom Snyder's television program.

Cliff Clavin Shock Therapy One of my favorite scenes from Cheers: Shock therapy! Cliff has an operation and no one from the bar visits him in the hospital. To become more likable, Cliff attempts a radical personality makeover: He gets a psychologist to give him a jolt of electricity every time he reverts back to his old self.

Boston Marathon Cheater Rosie Ruiz On April 21, 1980 unheralded Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line in the prestigious Boston Marathon. Her apparent victory in record time was immediately suspicious. First, everyone assumed Jacqueline Gareau was the leading female. Nobody saw Gareau lose the lead in the race at anytime after the eighth mile. Furthermore, Ruiz's running shoes were barely scuffed and she was hardly perspiring in the unseasonably warm weather. Two Harvard University students signed affidavits stating they saw Ruiz illegally enter the course just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Ruiz denied the accusations and maintained she had run unnoticed among a pack of male runners. Few people believed her story and she was subsequently disqualified after an investigation. To this day Ruiz has stubbornly refused to return her winner's medal, so Gareau was given a larger medal. Twenty five years later Gareau was ceremoniously allowed to break the tape--a thrill that Ruiz deprived her from experiencing in 1980. Ruiz had qualified to run in Boston by finishing the 1979 New York City Marathon with a decent time, but investigators discovered she had cheated there too. (She left the course after a few hundred yards, took a subway train to an area near the finish line, illegally re-entered the race and finished 26th.) Ruiz promised to prove her innocence by winning the 1980 New York City Marathon. She never showed up.

Family Affair 1966 Uncle Bill meets Jody for the first time and Sissy for the first time in many years. This wonderful family oriented series which ran from 1966-1971 explored the trials of well-to-do civil engineer and bachelor Bill Davis (Brian Keith), as he attempted to raise his brother's orphaned children in his luxury New York City apartment. Davis's stuffy English butler Mr. Giles French (Sebastian Cabot), also had adjustments to make as he was usually saddled with the responsibility of caring for 15-year-old Cissy (Kathy Garver) and the 6-year-old twins, Jody (Johnny Whitaker) and Buffy (Anissa Jones). Brian Keith was nominated for an Emmy three times for his role as Uncle Bill. On August 28, 1976, after partying all night at the beach town of Oceanside, California, Anissa Jones was found dead in the bedroom of a friend's house, she was only 18. The coroner's report listed her death as accidental drug overdose. Found in her system were cocaine, PCP, methaqualone and Seconal. The coroner who examined Jones reported that she had died from one of the most severe drug overdoses he had ever seen. In 1984, her brother, Paul Jones, also died of a drug overdose.

A Hat for Hedda Hopper Spike Jones and His City Slickers My mom always mentioned Hedda Hopper but I never really knew who she was until I stumbled on this clip! Hedda Hopper (May 2, 1885 February 1, 1966) was an American actress and gossip columnist, whose long-running feud with friend turned arch-rival Louella Parsons became at least as notorious as many of Hopper's columns.

Bob Beamon Long Jump Record The most mind-boggling one-shot achievement in sports history (in my humble opinion) occurred at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. American Bob Beamon obliterated the world record for the long jump by nearly two feet! To put this in perspective, until Beamon's fateful leap, the world record in the long jump had only advanced eight inches in the previous 32 years. Beamon's record leap of 8.90 metres stood until 1991. Beamon still holds the Olympic record.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas 'I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas', was sung by an 11-year-old girl, Gayla Peevey, who according to legend, was a regional child star of the Oklahoma City area. This 1953 hit was recorded as a fund-raiser to bring the city zoo a hippo. When released nationally by Columbia Records the song shot to the top of the charts, and the city zoo got a baby hippo named Matilda! This is the first Christmas song I remember hearing on a little plastic record player I had as a kid, I was 7.
