Pink Panther Flakes Commercial Anyone remember Pink Panther Flakes? This cereal was introduced in the 1970s when Pink Panther cartoons began airing on Saturday morning TV. As a kid, the mere thought of a pink breakfast cereal was enough to turn my stomach.

Wait Till Your Father Gets Home Anyone remember this show? Wait Till Your Father Gets Home was arguably the first animated series created with a totally adult audience in mind. Total Television notes the show 'was strongly reminiscent of All in the Family.' Indeed it was. Between 1972 and 1974, 48 episodes were created by Hanna-Barbera for syndication. Tom Bosley provided the voice of main character Harry Boyle, a typical American father who tried to provide for a family of five. His wife Irma and two eldest children (overweight Alice and lazy Chet) held distinctly different political and social viewpoints than the man of the house, but youngest son Jamie tended to agree with dad most of the time. Rounding out the cast was ultra-right-wing neighbor Ralph Kane whose anti-communist zeal basically turned part of the neighborhood into an armed camp. Ralph was voiced by Jack Burns. This clip shows a brief teaser for a first-season episode and the show's opening credits and theme song.

Bugs Bunny Eye Exam From the 1953 Warner Bros cartoon "Forward March Hare": Bugs Bunny is accidentally drafted and creates havoc during basic training, but he does do incredibly well on his army eye exam. It must have been all those carrots!

Don Martin MAD Magazine Cartoon This cartoon, likely published in MAD magazine sometime during the 1970s, is typical of both cartoonist Don Martin's unmistakable artistic style and off-the-wall, punny sense of humor.

He And She - Failed Sitcom 1967 In the fall of 1967 CBS introduced one of its first urbane, "sophisticated" situation comedies--He & She. It flopped despite having an excellent cast. Real-life husband and wife Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss played Dick and Paula Hollister. Dick was a cartoonist; Paula worked for Travelers' Aid in New York City. Dick's creation of Jetman was turned into a TV series with Jack Cassidy playing the role. Even though it had two blockbuster hits (The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres) preceding it in CBS' Wednesday night lineup, viewers generally did not stick around for He & She. Benjamin believed that the two popular lead-in shows actually served to hurt He & She because its urban comedy was a world apart from that of the rural sitcoms. Twenty-six episodes were made in the lone season it aired. Here is the opening montage.

Big John Little John - Sitcom Flop Who recalls this sitcom dud? In the fall of 1976, NBC decided to move away from cartoons and create a sitcom for its Saturday morning audience. It was titled Big John, Little John. The show's premise was that 40-year-old middle school teacher John Martin, while vacationing in Florida, takes a small sip of water from a hidden pool--not realizing it is the fabled Fountain of Youth that Ponce de Leon once hoped to find. The effect was that 40-year-old John would unpredictably descend in age to a 12-year-old...and then return to being an adult again just as unpredictably. (According to the story, had John taken a large drink from the pool, he would have been 12 years old forever!) Herb Edelman played 40-year-old John. Robbie Rist (notorious for his role as Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch) played 12-year-old John. Joyce Bulifant played 'their' wife. Only 13 episodes were made. The last first-run episode aired just before Christmas 1976, but reruns were shown until September 1977. Here is the show's opening.
