SOPHIA LOREN Still a Sex Symbol at 72 Born Sofia Villani Scicolone, in Rome Italy on September 20, 1934. An illegitimate child from a poor home in Naples, she became a teenage beauty queen and model. Her film debut was as an extra. She came under contract to film producer Carlo Ponti, later her husband, and blossomed as an actress. An international career followed and she won an Oscar for La Ciociara, (1961, translation Two Women). Frequently appearing with Marcello Mastroianni, her many films include The Millionairess (1961) and Marriage Italian Style (1964). In 1979 she published Sophia Loren: Living and Loving (with A E Hotchner) which was filmed for television as Sophia Loren: Her Own Story (1980), in which she played herself and her mother. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1991. How she stays so gorgeous is anyone's guess, but being Sicilian myself, I would be willing to bet there's something in the olive oil, no kidding. In any case, I better get me a few barrels of it lol

Lady in White Locked in a school closet during Halloween 1962, young Frank Scarlotti witnesses the ghost of a young girl and the man who murdered her years ago. Shortly afterward he finds himself stalked by the killer and is soon drawn to an old house where a mysterious Lady In White lives. As he discovers the secret of the woman, he soon finds that the killer may be someone close to him. This is a 1988 film that never received a lot of attention, but it was one terrific story, a kind of fantasy/mystery all wrapped up into one very good film. I haven't seen it on TV for several years, but if you happen to see it advertised, make it a point to watch it, you won't be sorry. It starred Lucas Haas and Kathryn Hellmond.

DION AND THE BELMONTS Then and Now In 1957 the group formed when Dion DiMucci joined The Belmonts - Carlo Mastrangelo, Freddie Milano, and Angelo D'Aleo - in late 1957. In 1958 they recorded 'I Wonder Why', which made it to #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and Dion and The Belmonts appeared for the first time on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. This success won Dion and the Belmonts their first major tour in late 1958, with The Coasters, Buddy Holly and Bobby Darin. This was followed up by the 'Winter Dance Party' tour with Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. On February 2, 1959, after playing at Clear Lake, Ohio, Dion decided that he couldn't afford the $36 cost of a flight to the next show. The plane crashed, Buddy Holly and the other stars were killed. Even after that time the hits kept coming for the group. In 2004, Dion gave a live performance at the Tropicana in Atlantic City with Dion (lead vocals, electric and acoustic guitars) Butch Barbella (keyboards, backing vocals), Louie Colleti (backing vocals), Jamie "King" Cotton (sax, percussion, backing vocals), Al Korosy (lead guitar), and Charlie Powers (drums, vocals.) Though this performance wasn't with the Belmonts, Dion sounded just like we remember him after 47 years! He's keeping R&R and Doo-Wop alive!

Lucia Zarate Worlds Tiniest Person Lucia Zarate looked like a doll and weighed less than most house cats. Born in San Carlos, Mexico in 1864, Zarate is considered the lightest person who ever lived. At maturity, the perfectly formed, doll-like woman stood less than 20 inches tall and weighed about five pounds. Billed as the Mexican Lilliputian, Lucia first appeared on tour in the United States at age 12. Her pay reputedly rose to $20 per hour--a fantastic figure in the 1870s. Unfortunately her career ended in tragedy. Zarate was travelling by train through the Rocky Mountains in 1890. The train stalled during a snowstorm and the fragile Zarate died of exposure.

Olympic Black Power Salute 1968 Most of the time controversies at the Olympics have to do with the Games themselves. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, it was the podium antics of two American medallists that created the biggest stir of the Games. The gold medallist from the 200 metres, Tommie Smith, and bronze medallist John Carlos used the occasion to give a 'black power' salute. The IOC, citing a 'misuse of the podium to make a political statement,' sent the two Americans home immediately afterward.
