Sherbet in the United Kingdom is a kind of fizzy powder made from bicarbonate of soda, tartaric acid, sugar etc and usually cream soda or fruit flavoured. The acid-carbonate reaction occurs upon presence of moisture (juice/saliva). It used to be stirred into various beverages to make effervescing drinks, in a similar way to making lemonade from lemonade powders. Today, people usually buy carbonated drinks rather than making them at home.
Sherbet is now used to mean this powder sold as a sweet. In the United States, it would be somewhat comparable to the powder in Pixy Stix or Lik-M-Aid/Fun Dip, though having the fizzy quality of Pop Rocks effervescing candy.

This is a clip from a show called "The New Show". It was produced by Lorne Michaels and some of the other original SNL and SCTV creators. This was the opening sketch to the first show which was similar to Saturday Night Live but nowhere near as successful. Ran one season. Guests included John Candy.

Remember when you went trick-or-treating as a kid, and there was always the neighbor that handed out the lame candy? In this ad for Snickers, you'll see what can happen when that very neighbor suddenly needs the help from some kids as he clings to the roof of his second story house after a Halloween un-decorating mishap. The message here is hell hath no fury like a surly trick-or-treater!

MMMMMM...I'm such a chocoholic!! Here's a 60's 'Three Musketeers' commercial with Joe E Brown, that was shown somewhere between 'RUFF 'N' REDDY' and the 'DENNIS THE MENACE' shows on Saturday mornings. Brown was a big star in comedies in the 30's, but if he's remembered at all now, it's usually for his role in "Some Like It Hot". Three Musketeers got its name because it originally came in three separate pieces: strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. Later it became just a single chocolate bar but the Mars Company kept the name.
