WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) — Actress and comedian Brett Somers, who amused game show fans with her quips on the "Match Game" in the 1970s, has died, her son said. She was 83.
Somers died Saturday at her home in Westport of stomach and colon cancer, Adam Klugman said Monday.
Hosted by Gene Rayburn, "Match Game" was the top game show during much of the 1970s. Contestants would try to match answers to nonsense questions with a panel of celebrities; much of the humor came from the racy quips and putdowns.
Shows from the 1973-79 run, featuring regulars like Somers, Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Reilly, are still seen on cable TV's GSN (formerly Game Show Network.)
Somers married actor Jack Klugman, the future star of the television shows "Quincy" and "The Odd Couple," in 1953. The two separated in 1974, but never divorced.

Alice Ghostley, the Tony Award-winning actress best known on television for playing Esmeralda on "Bewitched" and Bernice on "Designing Women," has died. She was 81.
Ghostley died Friday at her home in Studio City after a long battle with colon cancer and a series of strokes, longtime friend Jim Pinkston said.

Sadly when I think of Yul Brynner I don't immediately think of The King and I or The Magnificent Seven. I think of this public service ad from the mid-1980s that aired after he died from cancer. Pretty chilling, wasn't it?

Lois Maxwell, who became so well-known for her performances as Ms Moneypenny in the James Bond films, has died. The Canadian-born actress starred alongside Sean Connery in the first James Bond movie, "Dr. No," in 1962 as the secretary to M, the head of the secret service.- but there's much more to her acting career than that. She started out against her parents will - and without their knowledge in a Canadian childrens radio program - credited as 'Robin Wells'. Before the age of 15 she left for England with The Canadian Army's Entertainment Corps and managed (after her age had been discovered) to get herself enrolled in The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she met and became friends with Roger Moore. Her movie career started with a Warner production A Matter of Life and Death (1946). After having won The Most Promising Newcomer Golden Globe Award in 1947 she went on to participate in 6 Hollywood productions before she decided to try her luck in Italy. She had to leave for England because of her husband's illness, and since then she has had roles in a number of movies besides the first 14 Bond movies. In 1989 she retired.
She died Saturday night at Fremantle Hospital near her home in Perth, Australia. Bond star, Roger Moore said she was suffering from cancer. She was 80.

Cleavon Little passed away on Oct 22, 1992, but he left us with some great memories. In this scene from Blazing Saddles you can see why Cleavon should have been recognized in the same class as Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy for sheer presence. For his star performance in Brooks' classic comedy, he was nominated for a BAFTA award for Best Newcomer in 1974. He died of colon cancer at the age of 53.

Although she did a few films early in her career, Mary Martin was generally passed over for the filmed version of the musical plays in which she starred. She once explained that she didn't enjoy making films, because she did not have the "connection" with an audience that she had in live performances. The closest she ever came to preserving her stage performances were her famous television appearances as Peter Pan (she had starred in a musical version on Broadway in 1954, and this production was subsequently performed on television in 1955, 1956 and 1960). While she didn't enjoy making theatrical films, she did apparently enjoy appearing on television, as she did frequently. She died, aged 76, from colorectal cancer in California on November 3, 1990. In the late 1990s Oliver was diagnosed with cancer, and he died in Shreveport, Louisiana, on the same date that Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Charles M. Schulz, and Tom Landry all died....February 12, 2000.

In 1952, opera singer Margaurite Piazza made this commercial for Camel cigarettes. In 1968, she endured three operations on her face to remove cancer, and, in 1973, she was treated for cervical and uterine cancer.

One of the most despicable incidents in the era of the Jim Crow South occurred in the summer of 1955. Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago, was visiting a great uncle in rural Money, Mississippi. Till, who was unused to the Deep South's severe racial segregation policies, made the fatal mistake of flirting with Carolyn Bryant, an attractive married white woman who ran a general store in Money with her husband, Roy. Depending on which version of the story you believe, Till may have whistled at Carolyn Bryant, grabbed her wrist, asked her for a date, or playfully called her 'baby.' Whatever the case, the incident resulted in vigilanteism. At least two men took Till from his uncle's home at gunpoint, beat him severely, shot him, weighted down Till's body, and tossed it into the Tallahatchie River. It was found by fishermen three days later. Two men (Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam) were brought to trial. They were found not guilty by an all-white jury that deliberated for a little more than an hour. The two suspects later admitted to the crime after being paid $4,000 by Look Magazine for their story. Till's mother put her son's grotesquely bloated and battered body on display in an open casket before his funeral. Pictures of Till's corpse appeared in many newspapers around the world. Some estimates say that 50,000 mourners filed past his casket. Many historians claim the uproar surrounding the Emmett Till case instigated the Civil Rights movement. Milam and Bryant both died of cancer in the early 1990s. They remained unrepentant about the crime until their deaths.
