This is the tail end of an excellent Canadian documentary about the defense of Hong Kong in 1941. In December 1941, some 2,000 green Canadian troops were sent to bolster the exotic British outpost against an expected Japanese attack. It was a suicide mission. The Japanese attacked with about 90,000 battle-hardened troops. The heroic defense of Hong Kong lasted about three weeks before the inevitable surrender. Japanese troops brutally murdered wounded hospitalized defenders. Captured Canadian and British troops were shipped to slave labor camps where they existed in horrid conditions for nearly four years. Canadians don't generally win a lot of gold medals at the Olympics. When we do, it's cause for celebration. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Canada's Chandra Crawford won a gold medal in cross-country skiing. She further endeared herself to the country with her gleeful singing of O Canada on the medal podium.

Alex Trebek hosted this game show that was taped in Vancouver and later became infamous. The producers of Pitfall had big plans for this syndicated show, assuming it would get picked up by a multitude of American stations. It didn't, and many winners never collected their prizes. Alex also got stiffed. Last I heard he had never received a penny for his work as host and is still bitter about being stiffed by fellow Canadians.

What's the biggest news story in Canada today? CBC has decided to scrap the classic theme for Hockey Night In Canada which it has used on its broadcasts since 1968. Canadians from coast to coast are outraged. (I'm livid myself.) Not only is it a great tune, it's truly part of Canadian culture. Here the Kanata Symphony Orchestra plays it in a church--quite appropriate because hockey is often described as a religion in Canada.

Most Canadians born after 1986 probably wouldn't recognize this bit of history: a one-dollar bill. Citing the high cost of paper money (an average bank note stays in circulation just 14 months before it has to be replaced), the Bank of Canada ceased production of the green bills in 1986. They were replaced by the much more durable $1 coins, commonly known as loonies because a loon is featured on them, that same year.

Want to have a good time in the Netherlands? Wear something that identifies you as Canadian! In April 1945 the Dutch people were liberated from five years of Nazi occupation by forces largely comprised of Canadian troops. The Dutch have never forgotten the sacrifices made by the Canadians and are extremely grateful to this day. Here is a 2005 clip from the 60th anniversary celebrations of the liberation. The old gent shown for a few moments at the 4:05 mark is Smokey Smith, Canada's last Victoria Cross winner. He died a few months later.

Survivors of the appalling First World War Battle of Passchendaele gather at the site 70 years later in 1987. (For my money, the First World War was the most dreadful conflict in human history. Imagine, a battle to gain five muddy miles that cost 250,000 casualties!) Sixteen thousand Canadians were among the killed or wounded.
