Ann Margret Bye Bye Birdie 1963 The 60's gave birth to some great musicals. Director George Sidney began and ended his film of BYE BYE BIRDIE with a title song (that wasn't in the Broadway show), in order to showcase Ann-Margret. Amazingly, this woman looks almost the same today. I just don't know how they do it.

Our Last Moments with Clarabell On September 24, 1960, during the final showing of Howdy Doody, Clarabell, the clown who never uttered a word in all the years we had watched him, finally spoke to us, "Goodbye Kids". Children everywhere were elated and heartbroken at the same time. We miss Clarabell, but we especially miss the man behind the face of the clown, the man with the biggest heart of all, Bob Keeshan.

Eric Clapton Live LAYLA The story behind the song goes something like this. In 1966, George Harrison married Pattie Boyd, a model he met during the filming of A Hard Day's Night. During the late 1960s, Clapton and Harrison became good friends. Clapton contributed guitar work on Harrison's song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on The Beatles' White Album but remained uncredited, and Harrison played guitar pseudonymously on Cream's "Badge" from Goodbye. However, trouble was brewing for Clapton. Besides his difficulty in keeping a band together and his growing heroin addiction, when Boyd came to him for aid during marital troubles, Clapton fell desperately in love with her. The title, "Layla", was inspired by the Persian love story, The Story of Layla, by the Persian classical poet Nezami. When he wrote "Layla", Clapton had recently been given a copy of the story by a friend who was in the process of converting to Islam. Nezami's tale, about a moon-princess who was married off by her father to someone other than the man who was desperately in love with her, resulting in his madness, struck a deep chord with Clapton. Boyd divorced Harrison in 1977 and married Clapton in 1979. Harrison was not bitter about the divorce and attended Clapton's wedding with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. During their relationship, Clapton wrote another love ballad for her, "Wonderful Tonight." Clapton and Boyd divorced in 1989 after several years of separation.

Jason Alexander Sings Put On a Happy Face This is a clip from the 1995 made for TV version of 'Bye Bye Birdie', starring Jason Alexander, Vanessa Williams and Marc Kudisch. I like the movie version with Dick Van Dyke better, but this is closer to the Broadway version. In any case, Jason is quite talented isn't he?

Final Issue of Life Magazine 1972 Life, the magazine that turned photo-journalism into an artform, ceased publication in 1972. It had been a weekly 'general audience' magazine since 1936. A staple at newsstands, at one point it sold more than 13 million copies per week. By 1969, with general-interest magazines losing popularity, Life was no longer profitable. The December 29, 1972 year-in-review issue marked the end of Life. The word 'goodbye' appeared on the back cover.
