Theme Building LAX This is the famous "Theme Building" at the Los Angeles International Airport. This restaurant was designed in the early 1960's, when L.A. was still new and hope for the future abounded. Everyone thought the future would be just like "The Jetsons". The building was recently refurbished, and now the interior is intentionally retro-60's.

Bosom Buddies ABC 1980 to 1982 Who would have thought this sitcom would be the catalyst that would help rocket Tom Hanks into superstardom? It was a funny show, after their own apartment building was demolished, Kip Wilson (Tom Hanks) and Henry Desmond (Peter Scolari) had to pose as females in order to live in the all female Susan B. Anthony Hotel because of the dirt cheap rent. There were several fine performances by Donna Dixon, Wendie Jo Sperber, Holland Taylor, Lucille Benson and Telma Hopkins of Tony Orlando and Dawn fame. This reminded me of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot.

Yul Brynner in The King and I 1956 Lava's clip from My Fair Lady reminded me of the night in 1977, when I took my mom to see Yul Brynner live in The King and I at the Miami Beach Theatre of the Performing Arts. We were fortunate enough to have great seats a couple of rows behind the orchestra, and had a perfect view of the stage. I'd seen Yul Brynner hundreds of times on the screen, but never in person. He was magnificent! Such a handsome man, and his stage presence just blew me away, my mom was in heaven as well! Mrs Anna Leonowens was played by Constance Towers, who years later played Helena Cassadine in General Hospital. After the play, when the audience was leaving, we ran back to where the stage door was on the side of the building just in time to see him get into his Limousine. As it drove right by us I could see him and I waved like crazy, and he waved back with that wonderful handsome smile! I'll never forget that as long as I live.

Harold Lloyd Safety Last This is the final 10-1/2 minutes of Safety Last!--a silent 1923 Harold Lloyd film. Lloyd, despite his meek appearance, excelled at physical comedy. In this movie Lloyd has to take the place of a friend who was supposed to do a human fly act and climb the outside of the office building where Lloyd works. This is real, folks! There was no trick photography. Lloyd used a stunt double for the long shots in this clip, but all the harrowing closeups were of Lloyd. Lloyd had only a thin mattress on the sidewalk if he happened to fall. Safety last, indeed!

I Love Lucy Premieres October 15th 1951 Here's just some of the interesting trivia surrounding this legendary show. Benaderet and Gale Gordon were Lucy and Desi's first choice to play the Mertzes. Gale Gordon was the first choice to play Fred Mertz, but he was unavailable. When they came across William Frawley, Desi Arnaz wanted him, but he was told that Frawley would be a poor choice because he was a womanizer, a gambler, and a drunk. Arnaz said, "He's perfect!" Desi Arnaz invented the rerun during the pregnancy episodes of this series by re-airing some episodes from the first season to give Lucy some rest. When Lucy was pregnant with Little Ricky, network censors wouldn't permit her to say "pregnant." She had to say "expectant". The full names of Fred and Ethel are Fredrick Hobart Mertz and Ethel Louise Roberta Mae Potter Mertz Because of limited space on the sound stage, the Ricardo's bedroom and the Mertz's living room is the same set with different furniture. Desi Arnaz Jr. appears in the final first-run episode of the series. Although his sister, Lucie Arnaz, for some reason, doesn't. The Ricardos' address was 623 E. 68th Street. However, E. 68th Street in Manhattan only goes up to 600 - which means that the Ricardos' building was in the middle of the East River. Three "flashback" episodes were shown during the period when Lucille Ball was recovering after giving birth to Desi Arnaz Jr.. These episodes were filmed in advance after Ball found out she was pregnant. Although they slept in twin beds throughout the entire run of the series, during the first two seasons of the show, 1951-1953, Ricky and Lucy slept in twin beds that were pushed together in the same box spring. Once little Ricky was born CBS suggested that the beds be pushed apart to diminish the impact of the suggested sexual history of Lucy and Ricky. The only time we see the Ricardo's in two bed pushed together again is when they first move to the bigger apartment in the Mertz building, however, subsequently after that the beds are pushed apart again.

Kitty Genovese murder 1964 It was one of the most infamous murders in American history--not for the murder itself, but for the apparent apathy of people who presumably could have intervened to stop it. Twenty-eight year-old Kitty Genovese was returning home from her job as manager of a Hollis, New York sports bar in the early hours of March 13, 1964. She parked her red Fiat about 100 yards from her Queens, New York apartment building. Winston Moseley, a man with no criminal record who later stated he just wanted to kill a woman, chased Genovese for a short distance, caught her, and began stabbing her repeatedly with a knife. Genovese screamed for help. One neighbor shouted, 'Leave that girl alone!' Moseley initially left the crime scene. Genovese, seriously wounded, crawled to her apartment building, but Moseley returned ten minutes later, stabbed her several more times, and sexually assaulted her. The brutal ordeal lasted for about 30 minutes. Only after Moseley left did anyone summon the police. Genovese was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Two weeks after she died, a scathing New York Times story (from which this photo was taken) claimed that 38 people saw or heard the assault but did nothing. Subsequent investigations into the crime claim that number was greatly exaggerated, but no fewer than 12 people probably had the opportunity to call police. One neighborhood resident preferred to drown out Genovese's screams by turning up the volume on his radio. Another, a recent immigrant from France, said she was reluctant to call the police because her English was not very good. The phrase, 'I don't want to get involved,' became synonymous with the case. Moseley was eventually caught and confessed to Genovese's murder and two others. He was originally sentenced to death, but his sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment. He once told a parole board that he had written the Genovese family a letter to apologize for the 'inconvenience' of having killed Kitty. Moseley's 13th attempt at obtaining parole was denied in March 2008.
