Who would have thought this sitcom would be the catalyst that would help rocket Tom Hanks into superstardom? It was a funny show, after their own apartment building was demolished, Kip Wilson (Tom Hanks) and Henry Desmond (Peter Scolari) had to pose as females in order to live in the all female Susan B. Anthony Hotel because of the dirt cheap rent. There were several fine performances by Donna Dixon, Wendie Jo Sperber, Holland Taylor, Lucille Benson and Telma Hopkins of Tony Orlando and Dawn fame. This reminded me of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot.

Tom and Jerry . . u remember Saturday morning! . . Jerry slicing Tom in half, shutting his head in a window or a door, Tom using everything from axes, pistols, explosives, traps and poison to try to murder Jerry, Jerry stuffing Tom's tail in a waffle iron, kicking him into a refrigerator, plugging his tail into an electric socket, pounding him with a mace, club or mallet, causing a tree to drive him into the ground and so on. . . ah, the good ol' days!!

This clip is odd for a couple of reasons: It's been colorized and the dialogue is in German! However, the important part--Alfalfa singing Let Me Call You Sweetheart--is in English. This is from the episode Hearts Are Thumps (1937) in which Alfalfa's buddies, angry that he has betrayed the principles of the He-Man Woman-Haters Club, sabotage his lunch with soap.

Before we called them - "Buddy" or "Pal" ... They were our children.
In hard times or good times - they were at our side. We talked with them, listened to radio together, we read to them, laughed with them, played and worked with them.
Today, we teach our "Buddies" and "Pals" to work hard, to get a good job ... so you can buy good things on credit - I wonder what our father's father was taught by his parents????
