Alice Pearce - The First Gladys Kravitz The ABC sitcom Bewitched is certainly famous for having two different actors play Darrin Stephens. Many fans, however, forget there were two actresses who played Gladys Kravitz, the Stephens' nosy neighbor who often caught glimpses of Samantha's acts of witchcraft, but could not get her uninterested husband Abner to believe what she had seen. Alice Pearce played Gladys in the first two seasons starting in 1964. Known for her comical facial expressions, Pearce was well known to her Bewitched colleagues for being extremely funny and entertaining off camera. Pearce had achieved success on Broadway in Our Town and had a few appearances in movies and other TV shows before landing the role of Gladys Kravitz. Unbeknownst to any cast members, Pearce had a terrible secret: She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer even before the first episode was shot. Only her husband new of her condition. Pearce continued to work on the series even after it was obvious that she was quite ill. In some of the second season's episodes, Pearce is dressed in a long coat or a heavy sweater to hide the emaciating effects of her disease. At the end of her life she weighed a mere 70 pounds. Pearce worked almost until the day she died (March 3, 1966 at the age of 48) and was replaced in the cast by Sandra Gould who was reluctant to assume the role because Pearce had played Gladys Kravitz so well. Pearce posthumously won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy series. Her husband accepted it for her.

Ross Sisters - Contortionist Dancers You have to watch this amazing clip! The Ross Sisters--Aggie, Maggie, and Elmira--were three teenage girls from Texas who combined average singing skills, a bit of dancing, acrobatics, and some startling contortions in their unique act. This is a clip of the Ross Sisters in the 1944 MGM technicolor musical Broadway Rhythm performing Solid Potato Salad. It is their only known performance that was recorded on film. When this movie was made, the girls were 14, 16 and 17. Their memorable appearance in this film earned them a certain degree of acclaim and some stage bookings afterwards--including a United Kingdom tour in 1946 where they gave a command performance for King George VI. By 1950, however, the sisters' showbiz careers had sputtered to an end. All three had gotten married, and there is no record of them performing anywhere after that year.

Nick Lucas on The Tonight Show 1969 You've probably never heard of Nick Lucas, but here's a chance to discover a great, forgotten talent. In 1929, the 32-year-old Lucas, who was already a major recording star, introduced Tiptoe Through the Tulips in the movie Gold Diggers of Broadway. Tiny Tim revitalized the song four decades later and became friends with Lucas. When Tiny Tim got married on The Tonight Show on December 17, 1969, the 72-year-old Lucas was an honored guest. He performed two songs masterfully while playing his trademark style of deep guitar. Can you guess what the second song was? Lucas died three weeks before his 85th birthday in 1982.

Jack Dempsey on WML 1965 I posted this clip years ago, but its source is no longer available--so here it is again: From July 1965, former world heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey is the mystery guest on What's My Line? He had recently turned 70 years old--and still looked like he could fight his way out of any trouble. In fact, he would. At about this time two punks tried to mug the grand old champ near his Broadway restaurant. Dempsey flattened them both.

Lucy Teaches Ethel Merman How To Sing From a memorable 1964 episode of The Lucy Show, Lucy Carmichael (Lucille Ball) attempts to teach Broadway superstar Ethel Merman how to sing! Here's the premise: Ethel Merman wants to buy a home in Danfield, NY. Banker Mr. Mooney tells her he'll help her find a place but advises her to adopt an alias so the price won't be jacked up because of her celebrity status. Lucy and housemate Vivian Bagley (Vivian Vance) walk into the bank to ask for permission to sell tickets to their sons' Boy Scout fund-raising show and see Ethel Merman talking to Mr. Mooney. Ethel claims she's Agnes Schmidlapp, not Ethel Merman. Agnes, to the surprise of Lucy, agrees appear in the show as Ethel Merman. So Lucy takes it upon herself to teach Agnes how to sing like Ethel Merman. Here's the result...
