Rocky Marciano Kayos Joe Louis Boxing fans call it a crossroads fight: a young fighter ascends at the expense of an older fighter on the decline. Here's the best example of this: From October 26, 1951, rising young slugger Rocky Marciano ends the career of 37-year-old former heavyweight champion Joe Louis. This clip shows the final 28 seconds of the fight without commentary. None is necessary.

Larry Holmes Beats Muhammad Ali On October 2, 1980, Muhammad Ali came out of retirement to try to dethrone reigning world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes. It proved to be a disastrous move. Two years of inactivity had sapped Ali's already diminished skills. Holmes had little trouble dispatching the former champion. Here are the final two rounds of this one-sided affair. You can tell that Holmes actually reins in his attack. The fight is called by Howard Cosell.

Gerry Cooney Fouls Larry Holmes One of the best heavyweight championship fights of the 1980s was Gerry Cooney's attempt to win the title from champion Larry Holmes in June 1982. Although it was a very competitive fight (won by Holmes in the 13th round) it is most famous for Gerry Cooney's egregious foul late in round nine. Just watching it will make every male cringe in pain! Ouch! (The tenth round is also part of this clip.)

May 1947 Ring Magazine Cover Yesterday I posted a picture of former world heavyweight champion Bob Fitzsimmons. Here's the cover of the May 1947 edition of The Ring magazine. It contained a 50th anniversary feature on the contest in which Fitzsimmons won the title from James J. Corbett in 1897.

Jack Dempseys Broadway Restaurant Here's newspaper or magazine ad, probably from the 1950s, promoting Jack Dempsey's restaurant in New York City. It was a Broadway staple for many years. The ex-champ loved to mingle with his fans.

Billy Papke - No Boxing Trunks In the 19th century and first decade of the 20th century, there were no rules requiring boxers to wear trunks. Occasionally a fighter opted just to wear merely a protective cup which exposed much of his backside. This photo shows Billy Papke's wardrobe--or lack thereof--when he challenged Stanley Ketchel for the world middleweight title in 1908.
