I went to Hawaii this summer in July and we made it a point to stop at The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. I took this picture from atop the memorial. The memorial sits atop the sunken vessel. 1177 sailors are entombed in the sunken vessel. You have to take a short boat ride over to the Memorial and not one person spoke a word while on the memorial, even children were silent. It was a powerful moment for me and I choked up with tears. The Arizona went down with tons of oil and it still seeps up to the top today. May those who perished on that fateful day on December 7, 1941 rest in peace!

The third and final story from the 1969 pilot of Night Gallery, entitled The Escape Route, starred Richard Kiley, and centered around an escaped Nazi war criminal living in South America and haunted by his past. He begins to visit a museum where he is drawn to a painting of a fisherman on a lake. It's such a peaceful setting, that he becomes obsessed with it and soon begins to see himself as the figure in the boat. He is soon recognized by a survivor of the camps, played by Sam Jaffe. When Israeli agents are about to catch up to him, he flees into the museum, and to the painting, there he begs God to take him into the painting. What he doesn't realize is, the painting has been moved and in it's place is one portraying the brutality of the holocaust. I think with all three stories, Rod was showing us that after all is said and done, there is justice.

Of all the films I've seen over my lifetime, this monologue from Robert Shaw had the most profound effect on me. Apparently there was a lot of disagreement as to how this scene should be written, so a frustrated Robert Shaw ended up writing it himself and it worked out wonderfully. With the night air, the creaking of the boat, and Quint's haunting delivery, it remains one of the most frightening portions of a screenplay ever written.

For anyone who hasn't seen this film, Jaws is a 1975 thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel inspired by the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. Jaws bears similarities to several literary and artistic works, most notably Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. The character of Quint strongly resembles Captain Ahab, the obsessed captain of the Pequod who devotes his life to hunting a sperm whale. Quint's monologue reveals his similar vendetta against sharks, and even his boat, the Orca, is named after the only natural enemy of sharks. A direct reference to these similarities may be found in the original screenplay, which introduced Quint by showing him watching the film version of Moby-Dick. His laughter throughout made people get up and leave the theater (Wesley Strick's screenplay for Cape Fear featured a similar scene). However, the scene from Moby-Dick could not be licensed from Gregory Peck, the owner of the rights. The final scenes of the film, in which the men chase the shark and try to harpoon it with flotation barrels, parallel the chase for Moby-Dick in the novel. We have this in our library and watch it usually once a month. There's something about this film that sticks in my memory, and no, I never went back into the water.

You'll enjoy this: North Carolina's Bryan Williams (a.k.a. Chainsaw Ted) does his impressions of chainsaws, motorcycles, motorboats, and airplanes on a 1989 episode of The Tonight Show. That's entertainment, folks!
