The Hindenberg Disaster 1937 On May 10, 1937, in Lakehurst, NJ, thirty-five persons died and scores of others were injured as the Hindenberg dirigible exploded three hundred feet over the landing field at the end of her first voyage of the season from Europe. A terrific burst of flame engulfed the stern of the ship and spread with the rapidity of lightning to the bow. The inferno of blazing hydrogen gas cremated all living beings in its path, as the twisted skeleton of the balloon settled quickly to the ground. Rescue crews braved death to save sixty-three persons, some of them horribly burned.

Remembering Cleavon Little Cleavon Little passed away on Oct 22, 1992, but he left us with some great memories. In this scene from Blazing Saddles you can see why Cleavon should have been recognized in the same class as Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy for sheer presence. For his star performance in Brooks' classic comedy, he was nominated for a BAFTA award for Best Newcomer in 1974. He died of colon cancer at the age of 53.

Harvey Korman Passes Today May 29th 2008 At left is a photo of Harvey with friend and fellow performer Tim Conway. The tall, versatile comedian who won four Emmys for his outrageously funny contributions to 'The Carol Burnett Show' and on the big screen in 'Blazing Saddles,' died at UCLA Medical Center after suffering complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm four months ago. He was 81. Harvey's daughter, Kate Korman, said in the statement that it was a miracle that her father had survived the aneurysm at all, and that he had several major operations. 'Tragically, after such a hard fought battle he passed away,' she said. More info in the Comments:

Walter Johnson One of my all-time favorite baseball players: Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators. The scouting report on Johnson's blazing fastball noted, 'You can't hit what you can't see.' Once Johnson pitched three complete-game shutouts in a single weekend. For years his lifetime total of 3,508 strikeouts seemed insurmountable. Johnson retired in 1927. It took nearly 50 years for another pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts. Johnson became a beloved baseball figure--largely because he had the misfortune to spend his entire career with the lowly Senators. In 1924, when Johnson finally got to pitch in a World Series at age 36, the public rejoiced when he won the seventh and decisive game to give Washington its only World Series triumph.

Gig Young Murder-Suicide 1978 Actor Gig Young was outwardly debonair but he led a troubled life. Alcoholism curtailed his promising acting career and ruined more than one marriage, including a turbulent wedlock with Elizabeth Montgomery. Although he won an Oscar for his 1969 portrayal of a dance marathon emcee in They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Young's acting jobs became increasingly scarce during the 1970s. He was fired after just one day on the set of Blazing Saddles for alcohol-related problems. His last film appearance was in The Death Game where the 64-year-old Young met 21-year-old script supervisor Kim Schmidt. Schmidt became Young's fifth wife on September 27, 1978. Twenty-two days later they were both found shot to death in their Manhattan apartment. The case was ruled a murder-suicide, with Young the perpetrator. No note was found to explain the motive. Although Young's estate was valued at about $200,000, in his will he left just $10 to his only child, a 14-year-old daughter, whom Young claimed was not actually his.

High Anxiety TV trailer 1978 Mel Brooks followed up his hit comedies "Blazing Saddles","Young Frankenstein" and "Silent Movie" with "High Anxiety", a 1978 spoof of Alfred Hitchcock thrillers that once again featured many of his regular performers: Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman, Cloris Leachman, Ron Carey, Charlie Callas and Jack Riley - with Brooks in the lead role. Future Academy Award winning director Barry Levinson both co-wrote the film and also appeared as an extremely agitated bell hop.
