Charlie Chaplin Grave Robbery On Christmas Day 1977, Charlie Chaplin died at the age of 88 at his estate in Vevey, Switzerland. He was buried in a local cemetery. Sixty-eight days later, on March 3, 1978, Chaplin's coffin was disinterred by grave robbers. Shortly thereafter Chaplin's family began receiving calls from a man demanding $600,000 for the return of Chaplin's remains. Mrs. Chaplin had no intention of paying any ransom, but she kept in contact with the criminals so the police could hunt them down. Eventually they were nabbed 11 weeks after the crime. The culprits had reburied Chaplin's coffin in a corn field. Chaplin's coffin was reinterred in its original burial place--under six feet of concrete to deter further grave-robbing attempts. The criminals, recent refugees from eastern Europe, were convicted of 'disturbing the peace of the dead.'

Seattle Pilots The Seattle Pilots were an American League baseball club that lasted just one season--1969. This is the official team logo. The Pilots began play the same year as the Kansas City Royals, the San Diego Padres, and the Montreal Expos. The Pilots' owners were granted a team because they assured Major League Baseball a domed stadium would be built in Seattle within two years. That didn't happen. Instead they played at an antiquated minor league park called Sick's Stadium. The venue was so shoddy that seats were still being renovated on Opening Day. Visiting teams hated playing in Seattle because the ballpark's plumbing was horribly inadequate, forcing them to shower at their hotel. The stadium's toilets often failed when more than 10,000 people came to games. (That seldom happened; the Pilots drew just 677,944 fans for their 74 home dates. Still, the Pilots outdrew four other MLB clubs in 1969.) The team alienated potential supporters by having no local TV deal and charging as much as (gasp!) $6 per ticket--the highest price in MLB at the time. After finishing in last place in the American League West with a 64-98 record, and incurring losses of about $250,000, the team uprooted and moved to Milwaukee in 1970 and became the Brewers. Oddly enough, there is more interest in the Pilots now than when they were around. Mainly it is because of pitcher Jim Bouton's irreverent book, Ball Four.

Monica Seles Stabbing Incident In this 1995 interview with Barbara Walters, Monica Seles talks about being the victim of the most horrifying incident in sports--when a deranged tennis fan stabbed her in the back during a changeover at the German Open in Hamburg in 1993. The perpetrator was a lunatic named Gunter Parsche. Parsche was an obsessed Steffi Graf fan who resented Seles ursurping Graf as the top female player on the WTA circuit. Parsche was deemed not mentally responsible for the crime and was given a suspended sentence. Seles spent over $1 million in legal fees in an unsuccessful attempt to sue the German Tennis Federation for lax security. Seles never did completely regain her dominant form. In her absence Graf vaulted to the top spot in women's tennis. Thus Parsche's demented plot worked as he had planned.

Monica Seles SI Cover 1993 Earlier I posted a clip from a 1995 Barbara Walters interview with Monica Seles in which Seles discussed the enduring psychological effects of being stabbed on court by a deranged tennis fan. This haunting Sports Illustrated cover photo from 1993 shows a shocked Seles moments after the stabbing.

Sailor in iconic photo passes at age 86 Glenn Edward McDuffie-He's the sailor in Alfred Eisenstaedt's iconic Life magazine photo grabbing and kissing a nurse in the middle of Times Square after finding out World War II was over. McDuffie died on March 9, but news of his death was reported Friday. He was positively identified as the sailor in the photo in 2007 after many men claimed it was them. According to his obituary, McDuffie joined the Navy in 1942 when he was 15 years old. The obituary said he found a friend to forge his mother's signature, saying he was old enough to serve. On August 14, 1945, McDuffie was part of Eisenstaedt's legendary photo.

Imbibing Nuns Photo My favorite sports photo of 2014...so far. It was taken at the Canadian men's curling championship in Kamloops, BC on March 8, 2014. It appeared in the March 17 issue of Sports Ilustrated under the caption "Bad Habits."
