i recently had a chance to check out Garden-Opoly. This very fun version of Monopoly uses different breeds of plants instead of properties, with POISON IVY replacing MEDITERRANEAN AVE, and Orchids replacing BOARDWALK. Each player buys garden favorites, collects Clay Pots and trades them in for Greenhouses. Sounds easy enough - but add aphid infestation, water bills and a dandelion outbreak and it becomes a little more difficult... and a lot more fun! Each deed back contains interesting facts such as the appropriate climate, soil and watering for each plant, as well as, fun facts about origin, popularity and varieties. A player may even be elected president of the garden club (always wanted to be famous)... or may be WEEDING, and out of the game for three turns! The custom pewter tokens are: a hand trowel, garden clog, garden gnome, wheel barrow and ladybug...i'm the clog...can't keep my shoes on!

My dad usually went out on Saturdays to pay his bills, and when he returned, he always surprised us with something! One week, out of the blue, he brought home a canary yellow Morris Minor convertable. We had no idea why he bought it, but he seemed to be happy, pulling in to the driveway with that big smile on his face, like it was Christmas! We had to take turns driving it, then during supper he told us he'd bought it so he could take his grandkids out for a ride on the weekends! He was like a big kid himself. I think that's one of the reasons I miss him so much.

This was taken on our first vacation to Miami Beach in 1955. If she knew I was posting this I'd be dead! My mom was so typical of the 50's mother and wife, she worked over 40 hours a week, took care of our dad, cooked meals from scratch, cleaned a home and raised two daughters. She also paid all the bills, nursed everyone through their illnesses and made sure her own mother was taken care of. She's a tough cookie and still here at 90, taking care of her home, nursing all of us, and still making the best chicken soup and pasta in the world!

Most Canadians born after 1986 probably wouldn't recognize this bit of history: a one-dollar bill. Citing the high cost of paper money (an average bank note stays in circulation just 14 months before it has to be replaced), the Bank of Canada ceased production of the green bills in 1986. They were replaced by the much more durable $1 coins, commonly known as loonies because a loon is featured on them, that same year.

This coin didn't flip--it flopped! With great fanfare in 1979, the United States Treasury Department minted millions of $1 coins featuring a portrait of suffragette Susan B. Anthony on the obverse. Americans were used to dealing with dollar bills--which were still being produced--so the coins were largely shunned. Moreover, their size made them easily confused with quarters. The dollar was minted again in 1980 with little success. In 1981 it was minted solely for collectors' sets. The Susan B. Anthony dollar was reissued in 1999 to meet the demand of vending machines that required dollar coins for change, but they are still generally detested by the public.
