Once Upon a Time in America Once we were proud nation.. there was nothing we couldn't do, or accomplish. There was noting that we couldn't manufacture for ourselves. This was the American Spirit. It was what made this country the envy of every nation in the world. Now, as one TV commentator put it, "We have become suicidally arrogant ... we have the attitude that there isn't anything anyone won't sell us." It has been argued that "America holds no resemblance to the once great nation for which our forebears fought and died. Given the rapidity with which America has forsaken its heritage, can you imagine what it will look like 50 years from now?" - Chuck Baldwin Once can only wonder. But, Once Upon A Time In America, it was truly a great and promising place to be. George Blanda passes at age 83 George Blanda, the ageless Hall of Fame quarterback and kicker with the Oakland Raiders, has died. He was 83. The Raiders confirmed the death Monday and issued a statement saying "we are deeply saddened by the passing of the great George Blanda. George was a brave Raider and a close personal friend of Raiders owner Al Davis." Blanda retired a month shy of his 49th birthday before the 1976 season, playing longer than anyone else in pro football history. He spent 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears, part of one with the Baltimore Colts, seven with the Houston Oilers and his final nine with the Raiders. He scored 2,002 points in his career, a pro football record at the time of his retirement, kicking 335 field goals and 943 extra points, running for nine touchdowns and throwing for 236 more.

Franklin Half Dollar From 1948 through 1963, some 510 million American half dollars bearing the portrait of Benjamin Franklin were minted. They were replaced by Kennedy half dollars in 1964. I've never understood why half dollars fell out of favor as an everyday currency. To me they seem at least as practical as quarters.

Swastika Name Controversy There is a Canadian town (located in northern Ontario) that bears the odd name of Swastika. Founded in 1904, it began as a mining community. No one is quite sure about the origin of the town's name. When Naziism was on the rise in the 1930s, the government of Ontario forced the 600 people of Swastika to accept Winston as a new name for the town. The people rebelled, tore down the Winston sign on the highway, and replaced it with another Swistika sign that carried the message: 'To hell with Hitler. We had the name first.'
