For Old Fart Michael Richards on Fridays A younger Michael Richards as 'Combat Kid' on ABC's 'Fridays'. This was what SNL used to be, high energy, edgy and hip. SNL had become tedious and chances are that if you thought the same about Friday's you were just too young to understand the comedic references. SNL had become a media institution at that point, like Rolling Stone, which used to be considered part of The Underground Press, and if you had a media product to peddle it was simply a base that had to be touched by the star or written into the sketches. Friday's didn't care about any of that. From the announcer's screaming greeting 'Liiiiiiiiiive, from the Los Angeles basin!' to music by that day's hippest bands, Friday's showcased some of the most outrageous comedy to be found on TV. Most people remember Darrow Igus's Rasta Gourmet 'Do we bake it?' 'No no no no!' 'Do we fry it?' 'No no no no!' 'til finally 'We SMOKE it!' 'ya ya ya ya', exclaimed Igus' gourmet, whose only spice was Ganja. Michael Richard's Battle Boy got sicker and sicker as he developed the character, finally taking his little Sister hostage, burying her in the ground and threatening to torture her Barbie. Then there were the times he set his Army men on fire, complete with simulated screams. Very bizarre, but funny!

Gettysburg 75th Anniversary 1938 A handful of surviving Civil War veterans from both the North and the South reunited in Gettysburg in 1938 to mark the 75th anniversary of that titanic battle. Here are some films of the goings-on. They are all heroes in my estimation.

Sullivan Ballou Letter 1861 If you watched The Civil War, Ken Burns' remarkable documentary series, you'll remember this: the poignant letter Major Sullivan Ballou wrote to his wife before the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. Nobody writes letters like this anymore!

Iwo Jima Flag Raising One of the most famous and powerful images of the Second World War: Joe Rosenthal's dramatic photo of the Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the horrendously bloody Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. (Actually only five of the six are Marines; one is a Navy corpsman.) Three of the men pictured here were killed in action before the terrible battle finally ended more than a month later.

Harvey Korman Passes Today May 29th 2008 At left is a photo of Harvey with friend and fellow performer Tim Conway. The tall, versatile comedian who won four Emmys for his outrageously funny contributions to 'The Carol Burnett Show' and on the big screen in 'Blazing Saddles,' died at UCLA Medical Center after suffering complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm four months ago. He was 81. Harvey's daughter, Kate Korman, said in the statement that it was a miracle that her father had survived the aneurysm at all, and that he had several major operations. 'Tragically, after such a hard fought battle he passed away,' she said. More info in the Comments:
