This is what the ideal of female beauty was from about 1895 to 1915. It was the Gibson Girl look--named after artist Charles Dana Gibson. His drawings often illustrated magazine stories of the era. They were likely the first type of mass media to influence the perception of what feminine beauty is. The stereotypical Gibson Girl was tall, had an extreme hourglass figure, with her hair (preferably curly) piled atop her head in a bouffant, pompadour, or chignon style. This photo is of stage actress Camille Clifford who epitomized the Gibson Girl look.

An American classic: Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in It's A Wonderful Life (1946). It's the movie that ought to make you stop and think about the profound effects your life has on others.

Television evangelists seemed to be in the news for a lot of unholy behavior in the 1980s. In 1988 Jimmy Swaggart got caught with his pants down (literally). Marvin Gorman, another minster, had been exposed by Swaggart in 1986 for having an affair with one of his parishioners. Two years later Gorman got his revenge. Gorman hired a private detective to follow Swaggart. The private eye managed to take incriminating photographs of Swaggart cavorting in a motel with a New Orleans prostitute. Remember Swaggart's tearful confession? Here it is.

The final leading lady of the Our Gang comedies was Janet Burston. She joined the troupe in 1940 as a five-year-old during the MGM era and stayed until the series meekly ran its course in 1944. After Darla Hood left in 1942, Burston became the Gang's female lead by default. She is pictured here in a scene circa 1942. Note that Spanky McFarland is still part of the Gang, as is Billie (Buckwheat) Thomas. That's young Robert Blake (who acted under the name of Mickey Gubitosi) on Burston's right. In the final movies of the series, Janet was the romantic interest of Froggy Laughlin (standing between Spanky and Buckwheat). Fans of the series often criticize Burston for her over-the-top acting. "Oh, I was a ham!" she said in an interview late in her life. "But that's the way they wanted it--the hammier, the better!" Burston didn't have much of a film career after her Our Gang days ended. Married four times, she died of cancer in 1998 at the age of 63.

Look was a bi-weekly, general-interest magazine published in Des Moines, Iowa from 1937 to 1971, with more of an emphasis on photographs than articles. A large-size magazine of 11 by 14 inches, it was generally considered the also-ran to Life magazine, which began publication only months earlier and also ended in 1971 . . .
