Lunch Counter Sit In 1960 On February 1, 1960 four freshmen from North Carolina A and T struck a blow against segregation by sitting at a 'whites only' lunch counter at a department store in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were denied service and quietly sat there until the store closed. However, their actions caused repeat performances in the following days by even more black students--and numerous copycat sit-ins throughout the segregated south.

Wilbur Wood SI Cover A friend recently asked me a great baseball trivia question: Which MLB pitcher holds the post-1900 record for most games started over two consecutive seasons? My gut reaction was it had to be someone in the first decade of the twentieth century. When he said it was set after 1970, I correctly guessed Wilbur Wood of the Chicago White Sox. Wood, pictured here on a 1973 Sports Illustrated cover, was a steady knuckleball hurler who started 49 games in 1972 and 48 in 1973 to set the record of 97 starts over two consecutive seasons! Wood's career pretty much ended in May 1976 when a line drive shattered his kneecap. After a long rehab session, Wood returned to baseball but was not nearly as skillful on the mound as he had been before the injury.

Ty Cobb Steals Third Base This is a terrific action photo snapped by famed baseball photographer Charles Conlon that is nearly 100 years old! (Some sources date the photo to 1909; others claim it was taken in 1910.) Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers steals third base. Jimmy Austin of the Philadelphia Athletics is the third baseman. Austin was upended by Cobb's hard slide. Notice there's no uniform number on Austin's back. They did not come into vogue until the late 1920s.

The Conqueror- Nuked Many Actors Filmed near the site of contemporaneous nuclear testing grounds, the set was contaminated by nuclear fallout. After location shooting, much dirt from the location was transported back to Hollywood in order to match interior shooting done there. Scores of cast and crew members developed forms of cancer over the next two decades, many more than the normal percentage of a random group of this size. Quite a few died from cancer or cancer-related problems, including John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendáriz (who shot himself to death soon after learning he had terminal cancer), Agnes Moorehead, 'Thomas Gomez' , John Hoyt and director Dick Powell. People magazine researched the subsequent health of the cast and crew, which it published in November 1980. By the time of the article's publication, 91 of the 220 members of the film's cast and crew had contracted cancer, and half of these had died from the disease. The figures did not include several hundred local American Indians who served as extras on the set. Nor did it include relatives who had visited cast and crew members on the set, such as the Duke's son Michael Wayne. The People article quoted the reaction of a scientist from the Pentagon's Defense Nuclear Agency to the news: "Please, God, don't let us have killed John Wayne".

Classic Football Photo In this classic sports photo from 1960, Chuck Bednarik of the Philadelphia Eagles towers above Frank Gifford of the New York Giants--whom Bednarik had just flattened with a pulverizing hit. Gifford was out of action for a year!

Far Away From Home Since 1942, Armed Forces Radio and later, Television Service (AFRTS) has been providing information, education, and most importantly, entertainment to U.S. military forces everywhere. From broadcasts to the troops serving around the world in WWII, from Soul during the Korean War, Saigon throughout the Vietnam War, to stations in Europe and Iraq today. Since 1942, through today, wherever American men and women serve, a bit of the "hometown" travels with them. Thanks to Armed Forces Radio and later the Armed Forces Network the entertainment that they held so dear is never really far away. The Sting Trailer He's a trailer for the re-release of one of my favorite films: The Sting (1973). Sorry, the sound is slightly out of synch with the action.
