Anchors Aweigh Gene Kelly had a novel idea for his seventh film, the 1945 production Anchor's Aweigh. He wanted to dance with an animated character. As luck would have it a partnership of animators, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who had arrived at MGM around the same time as Kelly, had created the cat and mouse duo Tom and Jerry. In 1944, when Kelly was looking for a dancing partner, the Tom and Jerry series was riding high having just received back to back Academy Award wins for Animated Short Film. Jerry therefore was an obvious next choice. Gene Kelly and Jerry Mouse made cinematic history as the first dance partnership between a live person and an animated character. This is also pretty much the only time you will hear Jerry Mouse speak and sing.

Iwo Jima Flag Raising One of the most famous and powerful images of the Second World War: Joe Rosenthal's dramatic photo of the Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the horrendously bloody Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. (Actually only five of the six are Marines; one is a Navy corpsman.) Three of the men pictured here were killed in action before the terrible battle finally ended more than a month later.

The Corvair in Action 1960 Chevrolet Promo Film Ralph Nader will be running for President again this election. His only claim to fame was taking this car off the market back in the 60s. I only bring this to your attention because one if not two generations have no idea who Ralph Nader is. Google his book that took this car off the road Unsafe at Any Speed and you will find so many saying Nader was wrong.

Dionne Quintuplets The Great Depression did not produce many happy stories, but the birth of the Dionne quintuplets near remote Callander, Ontario, Canada in 1934 was at least outwardly a feel-good news item of the decade. Five identical girls were born to Elzire Dionne on May 28, 1934. They were attended to by a country doctor, Roy Allan Dafoe. Never before had quintuplets survived infancy. The story turned sour when the quints were made wards of the Ontario government because of the financial straits of the Dionne family and other concerns. The provincial government built Quintland, a tourist attraction where the girls were put on public display for the numerous visitors who travelled the Trans-Canada Highway to northern Ontario to see them. Quintland served as a home for the girls who were cared for by nurses, as well as a museum and viewing area for the tourists. Eventually some three million tourists came to Quintland--as many as 6,000 each day at its peak. (There was no admission charge to see the quints, but the region reaped millions of dollars in revenues from hotels, restaurants, etc.) At one point, the quints were Canada's top tourist attraction, surpassing Niagara Falls. The quints were isolated from the outside world and even from their parents and other siblings. The Dionne parents staged years of legal challenges to regain custody of their estranged daughters. They finally succeeded in 1943. The three surviving quints were awarded a large cash settlement in the late 1990s by the Ontario government. Only two of the girls survive today.

Hagler Vs Hearns 1985 This is the memorable, action-packed first round of Marvin Hagler's defense of his world middleweight title versus Thomas Hearns on April 15, 1985. It is widely regarded as one of the most exciting rounds of boxing ever. Not a dull moment here. See for yourself!

Vietnam Casualties One Week To show the human cost of the Vietman War, the January 21, 1972 issue of Life magazine printed the photos of every American solder who was killed there during the space of a week in 1971. I've often wondered what the public response would have been if Life had done something similar during the Second World War when an average of 1600 Americans were killed in action every week.

Oliver Original Cast 1964 February 9, 1964 was a good night to be in the audience of The Ed Sullivan Show. Not only would you have witnessed The Beatles make their American TV debut, as an added attraction you would have seen the original Broadway cast of Oliver! perform two songs. (That's Davy Jones as the Artful Dodger in the I'd Do Anything number!)

Nudist Camp Proprietor on Whats My Line From 1953, Yolande Reed, the operator of a nudist camp, is a contestant on What's My Line. Hilarity ensues. Listen to the audience's shocked reaction when they learn her occupation. Remember, this was scandalous stuff by the standards of the early 1950s!
