You remember the worst director in the world don't you, Ed Wood. During the fifties, this was the most widely known of his endeavors, second only to his autobiographical Glenn and Glenda. You have to appreciate this film, bad acting and all, because this man simply wished to fulfill his dream of becoming a filmmaker, and that he did.

Probably the worst show in the history of broadcasting, the Gong Show, with host Chuck Barris is remembered for the oddball assortment of acts that graced the stage between 1976 and 1978.

Titanic struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank two hours and forty minutes later on April 15, 1912.
The sinking resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, ranking it as one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history and by far the most famous.

The Brady Bunch Hour, a 1977 ABC variety program, lasted just six episodes before being yanked. It has been universally panned as one of the worst television shows ever. Here is five-and-a-half minutes of an episode that had Milton Berle, Tina Turner, and Rip Taylor as guest stars--and let's not forget Fake Jan! The quality of this clip isn't especially good, but you just have to watch it to believe it.

Perhaps the most nostalgic ballpark of them all was Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, home of the National League's Dodgers for 45 seasons. Built in 1913, it was one of the era's new concrete and steel stadiums. It held 32,000 of baseball's most loyal and colorful supporters. Brooklyn fans witnessed some of the worst baseball ever played in the National League--and some of the very best. Despite consistently strong fan support since 1890, after the 1957 season owner Walter O'Malley ripped the heart out of the borough by uprooting the Dodgers and moving the club 3,000 miles away to Los Angeles. Most Brooklynites would have preferred seeing the Brooklyn Bridge dismantled rather than lose their beloved baseball club.

This is the last couple of minutes from my favorite episode of The Beverly Hillbillies (The Indians Are Coming). It's political incorrectness at its best! Granny learns that a native tribe has a territorial dispute with the Clampett land claim back in Tennessee. She expects the worst and assumes the 'Injuns' will soon be attacking. In order to prevent the Clampetts from going back to Tennessee to fight the Injuns, Mr. Drysdale arranges for some Hollywood stuntmen to simulate an Injun attack on the Clampett home in Beverly Hills! Throughout the episode Granny wishes John Wayne were present to help fight the Injuns. He shows up at the very end in a brief cameo appearance.

The 1988 Olympic boxing tournament in Seoul, South Korea was replete with controversies. The absolute worst was the appalling decision that denied American Roy Jones an Olympic gold medal. The stench from this horrendous decision caused the entire amateur boxing scoring system to be revamped.

This edition of Time Magazine chronicled the worst incident in the history of the Olympic Games. On September 5, 1972 a radical terrorist group, Black September, got through ridiculously lax security at the athletes' village in Munich, West Germany simply by wearing track suits and acting like they belonged there. At 4:30 a.m. they took a group of 11 Israeli athletes, coaches, and officials hostage. Two Israelis were killed almost instantly for resisting. The other nine died at the airport where special German anti-terror police got into a gun battle with the terrorists. (One German policeman was killed too.) Up to that time, the 1972 Summer Olympics had been a splendid, friendly affair. The 'openness' of the Games and limited security was deliberate. The West German organizers wanted to erase the memories of the 'Nazified' 1936 Berlin Olympics. Since that awful day, Olympic Games security has become much more efficient and hugely expensive.
