This was Michael's appearance on the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. Ben was the theme of a 1972 film of the same name, and the sequel to the 1971 killer rat movie Willard, that starred Crispin Glover. It spent one week at the top of the U.S. charts. It also reached #1 in Australia, spending eight weeks at the top spot. Later it reached a peak of #7 in the United Kingdom. It became the first of thirteen #1 pop hits for Michael in the U.S. and his first #1 hit as a solo artist. Later on it was included on his album of the same name, "Ben", won a Golden Globe for Best Song, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. I've always loved listening to this, the music is beautiful. Michael at 13 was such a nice looking young man who had such an amazing talent, he should have left well enough alone.

This is the last half of the first round of Jack Dempsey's title-winning effort against huge world heavyweight champion Jess Willard. The date was July 4, 1919. The site was Toledo, Ohio. Watch as Dempsey lands a perfect left hook that sends Willard crumbling to the canvas. The brave champ rises and gets knocked down six more times before he's saved by the bell. (There was no neutral-corner rule or mandatory eight count in 1919.) Incredibly, Willard survived two more punishing rounds--without being knocked down again--before quitting in his corner at the end of the third round. Men were men back in those days!

Who was the world's first Ronald McDonald?
In October 1963 Ronald McDonald made his television debut in a costume far from the one we all know and love.
The world's first Ronald McDonald was played by Willard Scott who had several years experience of being a clown starring as Bozo the Clown.
It may be speculation, but some give Willard Scott credit for creating Ronald McDonald.
Not only was 1963 a good year for Ronald, McDonalds also sold it's billionth hamburger.

This is must-see footage for boxing fans: Jess Willard's heavyweight title victory over reigning champion Jack Johnson on April 5, 1915 in Havana, Cuba. For years Johnson claimed he had thrown the fight for a $50,000 payoff. However, I believe the film shows 'White Hope' Willard's knockout victory to be totally legitimate.

Willard Scott created the character of Ronald McDonald for a Washington DC franchise in 1963, at their request. His costume looks kinda creepy compared to todays version of Ronald. A paper cup for a nose? C'mon!!! And check out the food tray on his head.
