Actor with Gone With the Wind opening line dies Fred Crane (pictured on the left), the one-time actor whose Southern accent won him a slot as one of Scarlett O'Hara's beaux and the opening line in "Gone With the Wind," has died. Crane, who played one of the Tarleton twins in the 1939 classic, was 90. His wife, Terry Lynn Crane, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he died on Thursday of complications from diabetes. She declined to give details. The couple lived in Barnesville south of Atlanta, where they owned a registered historic 1846 Confederate home and Civil War hospital which they operated as Tarleton Oaks, a bed and breakfast that they named for his character in the film, Brent Tarleton. The other Tarleton twin was played by George Reeves, who later gained TV immortality as Superman. Born in New Orleans, Crane stumbled into his role on "Gone With the Wind." He was not yet an actor when he accompanied a cousin who wanted to audition for the movie. The casting director liked the 20-year-old's Southern twang, and he wound up being cast.

Our Gang - Darla Hood Darla Hood was the most famous of the Our Gang girls. Born in Oklahoma in 1931, Darla began auditioning for roles at age three. At age four she joined the Our Gang troupe, debuting in 'Our Gang Follies of 1936.' Darla's Oklahoma twang is noticeable in some of her early films. Darla's stint with the Our Gang series came during its heyday. Her character was both wholesome and coquettish. Alfalfa, Waldo, and Butch all vied for the pretty brunette's affections. She made the transition from the Hal Roach era of Our Gang to the MGM era. Her last Our Gang appearance came at age 11 in 'Benjamin Franklin Jr.' in 1943. Darla became a regular member of The Ken Murray Show during the 1950-51 TV season. She later reprised her Darla role in a spoof on a 1962 episode of The Jack Benny Program. (Jack played Alfalfa.) During the 1960s and 1970s she attended numerous cast reunions where she was a great favorite of young and old fans. In 1979 Darla was busy planning a 1980 Our Gang reunion when she entered the hospital for a minor surgical procedure. She contracted hepatitis--likely from a tainted blood transfusion--and died suddenly. She was just 47 years old.

Gymnastics Age Scandal - Kim Gwang Suk Some people never age--at least in the world of women's gymnastics. Kim Gwang Suk was a North Korean gymnast who competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She was also at the forefront of the one of the biggest scandals in her sport's history when it was discoverd she was listed as 15 years old for three consecutive years! (At that time, a gymnast had to be at least 15 to compete in senior events; the age minimum was raised to 16 in 1997.) Kim's petite frame fooled everyone, including the folks at FIG, the governing body for international gymnastics. They never did manage to obtain her real age. Nevertheless, the impossibility of Kim being 15 for three years prompted FIG to ban the entire North Korean team from the 1993 World Championships.
