Silent film star Rudolph Valentino died on August 23, 1926 due to peritonitis complications from an operation to fix a perforated ulcer performed eight days earlier. He was 31 years old. More than 100,000 grieving fans rioted outside the New York City funeral home where Valentino was resting.
