Louis-Roper Fight - 1939 During Joe Louis' long reign as world heavyweight champion, there weren't many quality contenders who could give him a good tussle. Case in point: On April 17, 1939, Louis defended his crown against Jack Roper in the challenger's hometown of Los Angeles. Here is the complete fight in which Roper was separated from his senses inside of one round. Roper's career record was a mediocre 63-43-10. No wonder the press began derisively referring to Louis' opponents as the Bum of the Month Club.

Bath School Disaster 1927 It might surprise you to learn that the worst act of school violence in American history happened way back on Wednesday, May 18, 1927 at the Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, Michigan. The perpetrator was a school board official named Andrew Kehoe who was angered by a new tax levy. Kehoe planned his revenge for months, secretly hiding hundreds of pounds of explosives beneath the school. On the morning of May 18, 1927, Kehoe killed his wife and fire-bombed his farmhouse. As fire officials raced to the Kehoe farm, Kehoe drove to the school and ignited the hidden explosives. As rescuers and concerned parents arrived at the school, Kehoe then blew up his car, killing himself plus several others who had survived the initial explosion. Kehoe's grim total for the day: 45 people killed and 68 others wounded. Most of the fatalities were students between the ages of eight and 12.

Listowel Arena Disaster 50th Anniversary Fifty years ago today, on Saturday morning, February 28, 1959, in a small Canadian town not far from where I live, a terrible tragedy occurred: The roof of the Listowel (Ontario) Arena collapsed due to a heavy accumulation of snow and inadequate construction. Seven peewee hockey players (aged 10, 11 and 12) and Listowel's recreation director were crushed to death by the debris while they were on the ice surface. A group of other young players preparing for their upcoming game in the arena's dressing rooms were completely unscathed. The arena was only four years old.

St Elmos Fire Love Theme David Foster This 80's movie directed by Joel Schumacher tells a story about a group of friends from Georgetown, struggling with passion, love, friendship, and their future after graduation. Lots of Brat Pack members joined the cast of "St. Elmo's Fire". It stars Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. BTW I love the theme song by David Foster. Great Memories! 1985

1948 World Series Game Five Some nifty highlights of Game Five of the 1948 World Series. The visiting Boston Braves thump the hometown Cleveland Indians 11-5. Notice how an extra fence has been erected inside Cleveland's Municipal Stadium to accommodate the overflow crowd!

Something In The Air Thunderclap Newman. For all of you who like one hit wonders. This was a project created by The Who's Pete Townshend and he even played on the recording. This was #1 for three weeks and it even kept Elvis from the top spot in the UK.

Far Away From Home Since 1942, Armed Forces Radio and later, Television Service (AFRTS) has been providing information, education, and most importantly, entertainment to U.S. military forces everywhere. From broadcasts to the troops serving around the world in WWII, from Soul during the Korean War, Saigon throughout the Vietnam War, to stations in Europe and Iraq today. Since 1942, through today, wherever American men and women serve, a bit of the "hometown" travels with them. Thanks to Armed Forces Radio and later the Armed Forces Network the entertainment that they held so dear is never really far away.
