Diffrent Strokes cast photo This is a cast photo from Diff'rent Strokes, a popular NBC sitcom that ran from 1978 through 1985. The show was about a Park Avenue millionaire widower who decides to adopt two black kids. (I'm sure that happens all the time!) The cst members were Todd Bridges as Willis, Conrad Bain as Mr. Drummond, Dana Plato as Kimberley, and Gary Coleman as Arnold. Today the show is cynically remembered for the legal and social troubles that befell its youthful stars. A Johnny Carson Carnac routine summed it up best: The answer is coffee, donuts, and a Diff'rent Strokes cast member. The question is name three things you find in the back seat of a police car!

Elizabeth Taylor Michael Todd Michael Todd breezed into Elizabeth Taylor's life on June 23, 1956....and sadly breezed out just as quickly on March 22, 1958. But during their time together, they accumulated a lifetime worth of memories. They traveled all over the world promoting the Mike Todd spectacularly produced Oscar winning, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, as well as promoting Elizabeth's movie epics, GIANT and RAINTREE COUNTRY. They married in Mexico in February 1957, days after Elizabeth obtained her divorce from second husband, Michael Wilding. Mike's death devastated Elizabeth to the point of propelling her into a state of self destruction when she did not care if she lived or died. In fact, she had to come close to death (herself) before appreciating living again. Mike and Elizabeth's love story is a special one...and their time together was so very short but so very potent. Elizabeth, today, claims he was one of the great loves of her life ...

Lindbergh Kidnapping Case 1932 One of the most famous criminal cases in American history was the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., son of the famous aviator. On March 1, 1932, sometime between 8 and 10 p.m., the toddler was snatched from his upstairs nursery at the Lindberghs' still-under-construction retreat home near Hopewell, New Jersey. A note in badly written English was found on the window sill. It demanded $50,000 in ransom for the safe return of the child. A crude homemade ladder was also found leaning against the house. There were few other clues. The case took an odd turn when a 72-year-old good samaritan named John F. Condon took out a newspaper ad volunteering to act as an intermediary to negotiate with the kidnappers. His offer was accepted but neither Lindbergh nor Condon immediately informed the police for fear of putting the child's life in danger. Eventually the money--much of it in rare gold certificates--was paid to a man in a cemetery but the child was not returned. Shortly afterward a child's body was found in a wooded area not far from the Lindbergh home. It was badly decomposed and was identified as the Lindbergh child based on a slight deformity on its right foot. The child had died from a severe skull fracture. Eventually Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a German immigrant with a criminal record in his homeland, was tracked down for spending one of the gold certificates at a gas station. About $15,000 in ransom money was found in his house. Planks from his garage matched the wood used to make the crude ladder. Hauptmann proclaimed his innocence, claiming he was only holding the money for a man named Isador Fisch who had returned to Germany and died there. Hauptmann said he only began spending the money after learning of Fisch's death. Hauptmann was tried, found guilty, and executed in 1936. There is little doubt that Hauptmann was somehow connected with the kidnapping, but there are lingering suspicions that he was assisted by someone who knew the routine and the goings-on at the Lindbergh household. The Lindberghs were not even supposed to be at their Hopewell home on the night of the kidnapping. The kidnapper(s) also had to know precisely when and where the boy would be left unattended.

Michael Todd on Whats My Line Movie producer Michael Todd, one of Elizabeth Taylor's 437 husbands, appears as a mystery challenger on What's My Line on February 17, 1957. (Watch Bennett Cerf do a masterful job of narrowing down the field--only to guess the wrong movie producer!)

Curious Death of Thelma Todd Thelma Todd was a pretty blonde Hollywood actress who got her start in movies after she won some beauty contests in Massachusetts. Todd appeared in about 120 movies from 1926 through 1935. On the morning of Monday, December 16, 1935, the 29-year-old Todd was found dead in her car inside a garage belonging to Jewel Carmen, a former actress. Carmen was the former wife of Todd's lover and business partner Roland West. An autopsy determined Todd's death to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Todd had a wide circle of friends as well as a busy social life. A subsequent police investigation revealed that Todd had spent the last night of her life at the Trocadero, a popular Hollywood restaurant, at a party hosted by entertainer Stanley Lupino and Ida, his actress daughter. At the restaurant, Todd had a brief, unpleasant exchange with her ex-husband, Pat DeCicco. However, her friends stated that she was in good spirits, and were unaware of anything in her life that could suggest a reason for suicide. Nevertheless, suicide was the verdict of a Grand Jury. LAPD detectives first concluded that Todd's death was accidental, the result of her either warming up the car to drive it or using the heater to keep herself warm. Other evidence, however, points to foul play. Some Hollywood buffs believe Todd was the target of extortion and was killed fo refusing to pay. It is also possible that she was locked in the garage by her assailant after she started the car. Blood from a wound was found on her face and dress, leading some to the conclusion she was knocked unconscious and placed in the car to succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning. Todd's body was cremated, thus no further autopsies could be performed. Her death certificate states the cause of death as accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

One-Legged Wrestler Wins NCAA Title Arizona State University (ASU) senior wrestler Anthony Robles capped off his college career accomplishing the most difficult task in the sport: winning the NCAA Championship. He earned the 2011 125-pound title with an impressive 7-1 decision over Iowa sophomore and defending national champion Matt McDonough on March 19. The championship victory didn’t come easy, but the 21-year-old Mesa, Arizona native is no stranger to overcoming odds. Robles was born with just one leg, but that never stopped him from doing anything any two-legged person can do. Since he was a toddler, Robles refused any special assistance typically allotted for someone missing a limb. According to reports, he tossed aside his prosthetic leg when he was only 3, choosing instead to hop on one leg or use his arms to walk. When he reached the sixth grade, he broke a record at his school for the most pushups performed. But the record-setting performances didn’t stop there. Robles first started wrestling in the eighth grade, joining in after watching one of his cousins during a practice. He stuck with it and by the time he reached age 17, he had won two Arizona state wrestling championships, earning a 46-0 record during his junior and senior years at Mesa High School. He remained successful at ASU, earning All-American honors, along with a couple Pac-10 Conference titles. But Robles said the National Title was by far his greatest athletic accomplishment so far. “I had a lot of butterflies going out there. I’ve dreamt about stepping on that stage a dozen times, and this whole year I’ve just been preparing for that moment,” Robles told the Daily Iowan. “I was scared. I was scared out there, but as soon as I hit that first takedown, I sort of relaxed.” Most may immediately think of the disadvantages a one-legged fighter may have, but there are a few advantages to wrestling with just one leg, too. Because he doesn’t carry the weight of an additional leg, Robles can weigh in at 125 pounds with a lot more muscle weight in his upper body than his opponents. He has also developed a unique style of wrestling with just one leg, which opponents have difficulties preparing for. “First time wrestling a tough opponent like that, it’s quite obvious there’s a difference in style of someone that has one leg and a large upper body as opposed to anyone else in the country,” said McDonough, who will return as the nation’s top wrestler next year. “It’s definitely not an experience to take lightly…” Robles, who will graduate from ASU in May, told ESPN reporters that his wrestling days are now over, but he plans on pursuing a career in public speaking. He always told the media that he wrestles for the love of the sport, and he’ll apply that same passion towards uplifting and motivating those in need. "It inspires me when I get kids, even adults, who write me on Facebook and send me letters in the mail saying that I've inspired them," Robles told USA Today. “I want to keep it up.”
