Titanic struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank two hours and forty minutes later on April 15, 1912.
The sinking resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, ranking it as one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history and by far the most famous.

Within days of the sinking, a United States Senate subcommittee launched an investigation into the incident, they reported that 1,517 people perished in the accident, while the British investigation placed the number at 1,490

Here is a British made Science fiction movie starring Harvey Keitel, Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett. At this time, the producer was involved with another film involving a ship called "Raise the Titanic!" That film went way over its budget, so this film suffered with getting its production cost cut down. One of the amusements of "Saturn 3" was the relationship war between the three in the movie. The other was that the director was not amused at the fact that its film had a Brooklyn accented Harvey Keitel. He decided to change his voice by hiring another actor to dub over Keitel's voice into the already filmed screen dialogue. When shown on NBC television four years later, "Saturn 3" was heavily edited. In doing so, adding music and a few scenes that were not shown in theaters attempted to make the film better than it was. *E*

William Alden Smith was a respected and capable career politician from Michigan who, unfortunately, became the subject of ridicule for one unfortunate public statement. Smith served in the Michigan House of Representatives, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate. When the R.M.S. Titanic sank in 1912, Smith chaired the American investigation into the maritime tragedy. Although the inquiry was responsible for creating many improved international safety measures regarding oceanic shipping, Smith was widely mocked (especially in the British press) for asking why the passengers in the doomed ship didn't seek safety in the Titanic's watertight cabins. It was pointed out to Smith that the so-called watertight cabins were meant to keep the ship afloat, not to hold passengers. Furthermore, the cabins would have been no help to passengers as they sank with the rest of the Titanic. The British newspapers quickly nicknamed the distinguished senator 'Watertight' Smith.

Millvina Dean, the last accepted survivor of the R.M.S. Titanic disaster, died on May 31, 2009 at the age of 97. She was only a few weeks old when she, her brother, and her parents boarded the famous doomed ship in Southamption, England. (Her father went down with the ship.) Her ashes were scattered at the docks in Southampton on October 24, 2009 in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and about 150 members of the British Titanic Society. Dean is pictured here in 1998 autographing movie posters.
